Title: Corrosion on brake cylinders
Post by: JustcallmeMrT on September 13, 2014, 03:59:39 PM
I need an opinion - there is some pitting on the cylinders for my fron calipers, would you guys replace these?

Well I would. I think you can get polished stainless ones now fairly cheaply.

Cheers .. Ash

Me too. Nothing worse than all that effort refilling and bleeding the system only to have to do it all again.

Put it this way mate £50 for 2 pistons or £3,000 for the funeral costs after the brake failure

A good match is stainless steel pistons and genuine seals. Did find some stainless pistons for £12 each.

Having pulled em out I'd be putting new pistons and seals in, but so far I haven't had to replace a set on any of my bikes bar the 250 nighthawk, and I got a bike shop to sort that, wasn't much more than I could but the parts for ( actually a bit less he gets parts at trade prices) I have got away with worse pistons, but it really would be a false econonomy not to do new seals (safety wise I would never re use) and risk the new seals on those pistons.

I'd replace them, as you have them apart.
There's no way that sort of minor defect would cause Brake failure, but they will only get worse over time.

I've just made some new Aluminium ones for my VFR400R . . .

I'd take one along to a machine shop and ask how much to replicate them in Stainless, it may not be too much at all, as it's a very simple job on a Lathe.
