Hi all, more advice needed. I'm looking to keep a fairly stock setup for now and was wondering what you recommend for air filter elements and battery? I've seen the stuff from DSS and CMSNL, but wondering what the real world says. What are you guys running and where can I get it?
Thanks!

If the bike is going to sit idle for long periods I recommend a Motobatt battery.
I tend to stick to genuine filters

Agree about Motobatt. I got one of these:
http://www.motobatt.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=106&year=74-78&cc=550&manufacturer_id=16&category_id=63&model_id=296
That's your model but it comes up the same for a 400F (for me). Look around for the best price, of course.
No bags of acid to squirt in (and spill out later). Bit of a squeeze getting it into the battery bay, but all good in the end.

I've read that the charging system on the cb can reduce the life of these glass mat batteries - any experience with that?

Only had it 1 yr and don't ride the bike that much so no, I couldn't comment. Unless your usage patterns were different perhaps it doesn't really matter? Anyone else know?

What's wrong with a regular battery like https://www.louis.eu/artikel/saito-battery-fuer-honda-cb-550-f1-f2-four-in-one/10036800?filter_bike_id=0036&list=13033311 ?

I found the oem batteries better than cheaper lead acid ones. I have not tried the agm type in a 500 / 550 but on my wifes cb250 nighthawk I have had to replace the maintenance free agm battery every year yet never on the 125 rebel which seems odd. Doesn't help a lot. I will be cheating horribly and fitting a bog standard car battery on my 500/4 but I have the benefit of the space in the chair.

Why risk acid running over the pipes. Its almost impossible to find original pipes that aren't stained.Or even through the chain due to badly routed breather pipe.
The Motobatt batteries are brilliant the one in my dads Trophy 1200 is mounted on its side and it can be left for months at a time and has not failed to start it yet.
