Title: front pipe fork - chrome condition
Post by: antonypo on December 09, 2014, 02:02:22 PM
After removing the gators to replace the fork seals on my usa k4 I noticed scouring on the chrome pipe forks. After further inspection and removing the cushion fork covers, I could see why.
Someone in the past had added a chrome washer underneath the circlip on each fork. As this did not belong it has moved about over the years and scoured the chrome.
My question is when do these become illegal to ride/use? As long as the new seals do their job is it ok to continue using them as at £260 each I don't want to replace if not necessary.

Secondly, can anyone tell me the correct way up for the new fork seals? Taking the old out destroyed them and other than a slight hump on one end they look exactly the same either way up.
Thanks
Antony

Anthony
On the fork seal there is a spring type ring that goes at the bottom,as for the fork tubes as long as the seal don't leak they are fine.Mot ers might know different as been out of the UK for 14 years now and rules may have changed

Not sure were this washer is on your bike.
Forks will not pass a MOT if 1) they are bent 2) if they leak 3) if any mounts are broken 4) if they are not operating in the way they should.

K1 forks have a washer after the fork seal before the circlip

What i am not understanding Antonypo. Is you say a chrome washer under the gators scouring the chrome pipe forks???
Not making sense of this washer. Are you saying that it is on the outside?

Agree Trig the washer was located on the top off the seal under the circlip. There is no way that it would run against the tube, the discolouring is down to old age like most of the old gits club ;) ;)

When I bought mine the seal wasn't seated properly so the  circlip put a lovely gouge in the tube about an inch long.

Good point Mick. I see what he means now.

I think I took the washer out last time and replaced the seals with thicker ones.
Supposedly to make them last longer
Doesn't work as they have been weeping since I fitted them.

Bitsa, i have a mate that has a XJ 1200 drag bike. I have had them re-chromed and put in so many different seals that i lost count, they still had a light misting. In the end he put a small hole in the dust caps and pumped them full of silicone. That worked

Someone once suggested that the chrome can were thin but I find that hard to believe.

Yours sounds like you have over filled then Mick. 220cc is for a total clean out. some people drain them from the drain bolts and then put in 220cc, not thinking about the 20 to 30cc left in the forks.

Do you think they will still leak if I just drain and refill them.

They should not leak if you drain them and not re-fill them ;)

It is winter Mick. Give them a good service and if they are off, give the head stock bearings some new grease.

OK so I'm legal as long as they don't leak - cheers. as for the washers, I don't get why they are their underneath the cir clip if they don't belong. it's defo a k4 by serial number.May leave them out ???
Looking at the seals there is a spring in top and bottom so still not sure which is top. One u tube said the slight rounded edge  is the top so may go for that. Copy link in your browser.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc9UkR4C7-E                         AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK! They are the same as i bought

I am obviously stripping all the tubes and replacing parts that are tired, such as head race bearings, gators, springs(small rebound) chrome shrouds, bolts and washers, so how much oil is needed in each one from dry (in uk ml please!)
Thanks for the help so far.

About the oil level in a front fork leg.
Think some measure/distance was given from top of leg to level down the tube for my 75/5 BMW.
To be checked with a piece of steel wire. Like the oil pin in the motor.

Hmm, wouldn't take too much notice of them, have you ever driven one of their cars? Like the North Sea on a rough night, wallow all over the place!:o

Hairy, they have nice cars. As long as you drive in a straight line, don't use the brakes and never go over 70 mph or hit any bumps more than 5mm, you will be OK ;D

For the record, I'm pretty good with the washing machine... these words could be mine:

I left my baby at the launderette, you can put a little money you can place a little bet that when I see my baby the blacks will be grey and the whites will be grey but the blues are still blue

Ok back to forks.

I know Trig, many years ago, I foolishly bought a 1966 Ford Mustang, 4.7litre V8, auto, drum brakes all round, and not even a servo! And marshmallow suspension, very quick off the line, but cornering was scary, and if you had to stop in a hurry, both feet on the brake pedal (it was huge!) and close your eyes, probably long enough to get a good night's sleep! :o One more thing, 12-13mpg driven carefully, 6-7 if you gave it some stick :(

Funny the only US car I've ever driven was a dark blue mustang, behaved like you say and had cloth roof gaping half an inch above front screen and in  the cold season.
But the biker community seems to know the trick about depth down to oil level doing it by a cut to length tube on/from a plastic container maybe like the ones used to spray on cars front screen to get rid of ice on a frosty morning! Just overfill the fork and pump out surplus to an even level for both legs.
