Title: Shortening oil hose
Post by: AshimotoK0 on February 12, 2015, 08:31:24 AM
In 2011 I bought loads of heavy stuff from the States , 750 gearboxes, K0 front wheel with tyre and disc still  attached and never got stung for customs or VAT. But then I bought some K1 oil hoses and paid almost double because of import charges plus payment to Parcelforce for handling. Anyway typical eBay, he guaranteed me they were from a K1 but one hose is longer than the early bikes (aka K7/F2). Anyone know if a hydraulic hose company could re-crimp a ferrule on it  if I shortened the longer one. They are really nice condition  hoses though, so I would to use them on my K0 build if I can.

Sadly you always seem to get stung for customs charges nowadays as they have clamped down on it.

Not sure if you kinked it it would restrict flow. Difference in length off the top of my head is about 1" There is a Service Bulletin on moulded profile  kinked oil hose warning on K3's I think.
Rich .. if you could check with your son as there is also a Pirtek near here I can go to.

BTW evidently once you have re-zinced the ends you can spray the braiding with matt black paint and they look spot on. A well known sandcast guru told me that. Of course, early sandcasts have smooth outer's to the hoses.

The bulletin was about early UK bikes and the hoses were not well made and "Kinked" which restricted the oil flow and knocked the ends out

Hi Ash quick answer is yes ,but they can't use the original crimp as the tube has an insert that it squeezes against the crimp.
You will have to see what a modern crimp of that size will look like.

Hi Ash there's one of the German specialist's that's selling rebuilt hoses a sins stainless braided hose I would think he could get some made with standard hose. The crimps on these look like original ones.
