Looks mostly there and potential to be up and running within a weekend if the engine fires up and the carbs aint gunked up. Deffinately smarter than my first cb550/4. No puddle of oil under it that I can see, that has to be a good thing.

What you can't see Matthew is that there is no clutch in it, I was given a box of clutch plates, springs and bits I don't even recognize. The engine does turn over, ie, not seized. If I keep it, which I probably will, this will be a serious learning curve for me. Will need to take engine out to get frame powder coated, that's sort of the easy bit. Then I think I will need to strip and rebuild engine, never done that before on a 4 cylinder Honda, only done it once on one of my old T140 Triumphs about 30 years ago with my Dad's help!!. I think I would be OK with doing the carbs myself. If I need to get in to the electrics, well, god help me, I would not know where to start, have not got a clue. Then there's the housework, ironing, baking etc etc to fit in as well, where will it all stop I wonder!!!!. I love your optimism of on the road by the weekend, what weekend, what year, who knows ;D ;D ;D

hey Julie,
good luck to you,your a nurse,they can do anything,I know< I married one over 40 yrs ago,and she still
controls me,
I know your all powerful, you will prevail !!!
spend time planning, get the motor turning over, plugs out,oil down the plug holes, frame sorted,
its all in the mind,
you can do it
-
Thank you John. Yes, us Nurses are forever resourceful and will certainly have a go at most things. Also, it's an inanimate lump of metal at the end of the day, so I can't do any harm to it if I get it wrong, unlike my patients.

Hmm, depends on Why they pulled the cluch appart? Sounds like your going to be sensible and check it all out and fix the cosmetics too. There are a few 550 spares about my shed if you find something amiss. 550 engines are not at all bad for the beginner, my first engine rebuild was a cb550, took it appart over a weekend and by monday was riding it round Scotland having emptied the sump of broken piston rings and fitted a slightly less knackered pistons and rings. The danger is that other things can seem more tempting and re starting a rebuild that has stalled can be for some reason a bit of a holdup, or is that just me? I keep telling myself the warm weather will get me back weilding the spanners. This is reminding me my own 500 is languishing half rebuilt in a cold dark shed. Must make time.

Clutch maybe down to it has the wrong clutch case. Both engine cases are CB500 ;)

Good on yer Julie... have a go and ask as you go along for advice on here. I rebuilt my first 400/4 engine in 1980 and it was a learning curve but very satisfying when you complete the job. Back then, armed with only a Haynes manual and no Internet I deciphered the crankshaft, main bearing shell codes ( I got a crank/rods from Richies bike breakers in Hull with less than 1k miles on it but of course I had to select new main bearing shells to match my crankcases, so went into the main 5-star Honda local dealers for them to check my selection but they didn't have a clue, so I just said order me these colour coded shells and took a punt on it. If you do intend to rebuild the engine then my advice is start your hunt now for any NOS 'consumables, like cam chain, primary chain, shells, gasket sets, chain tensioners. If you find them at a lowish cost they are a good insurance policy and better than money in the bank.
Why can't my two daughters (26 and 21) take any interest in anything mechanical like yourself. Plus you get this at 11:30pm at night. "Daaaad The bad news is I just dropped my mobile phone down the toilet but the good news is, I flushed it before I dropped it down there...pleeeees pleeeeees can you fix it for me ..or..... " My phone just went through the hot wash cycle in the washing machine 'cos I left it in my jeans but it then went through the drying cycle as well so it should be OK won't it ...pleeees tell me it will be OK dad" These are true stories and miraculously both phones lived to fight another day :D. The wonders of isopropyl alcohol..every home should have some.
When I first went to Uni I got gladular fever and had to leave so I got a job as a 'Temporary Nursing Assistant' in the local mental hospital for 6 months, until I could restart the next year at Uni ... got some good stories from that experience I can tell you ;D.

Good spot Trigger. I wonder just how much 550 that engine is?( quite likely not? ) I would gladly swap a decent 550 engine for a cb500 one that wasn't too knackered. Looking at it in the light of the engine being a cb500, it is a fair geuss the bits in boxes are the cb550 bits that dont really fit a cb500 or vise versa. The missing engine brackett, wrong cluch etc someone with a similar attidute to me in the mix and match as long as it fits, but with less spare parts in the shed may well have come unstuck playing mix and match. The question is if the engine internals are mix and match or has it just had an engine swap.
-
500 /550 all means the same to me at this stage...............absolutly nothing ;D ;D ;D
-
Cluch and engine casings plus a few other internals are significantly different, but other bits do interchange. Power about the same @50bhp cb500 cluch has a bit of a propensity to slip, especially if giving it the beans. Cb500 clutch pushrod a problem to source. The cb550 gearbox is also stronger I would say, having never had a 550 gearbox die but a couple of 500 ones wear out 1st - at very high milage, 200,000 or so out of my sidecar bike.

Quote us the full number on the flat pad RH side top of crankcase, on front of cylinders should be a small flat pad with the CC and finally take off the sprocket cover and post a pic, then us sad people can tell you exactly what you gat and/or need
-
I will certainly do that Bryan. Will do some pics over next day or two.
-
Right Bryan, found what I, or you, was looking for:-
CB550E-1146408
544cc

Right, that's a 550 engine with a 500 sprocket cover, won't hurt but ain't right. If the clutch cover is also 500 that will not work for two reasons:-
(1) there is no way of fitting the 550 clutch operating mechanism
(2) its a different shape at the bottom rear and oil will pee all over the floor!
need some pics of the clutch bits you have, including the cover, preferably removed but you can e mail them direct if you want.
Haven't forgotten your 400 cd just trying to get the stepsons crohns stabilised in order to get time to search the tip sorry study!! will add in the 500/550 one as well
-
Thanks very much Bryan. I will take more pic's another day and PM you
Thank you
