Title: Nearly There !
Post by: andut on September 10, 2015, 11:25:51 AM
Hi  all !

Finally got to a stage where I could MOT the bike last week !  It took a couple months longer than expected, but I'm quite pleased with my first attempt at a bike rebuild, even if it may not be to everybody's taste !

Much to my surprise it fired up and ran really well straight away with only a minor idle speed adjustment.  Bit tappety to start with, but have now reset them, and it sounds great !

Managed to lose idle on the way home, so I'm assuming that I'll be removing and cleaning idle jets when I get 5 minutes, and then I can hopefully put a few on it before it's first oil change.

Have to say that the front brake is interesting !  MOT tester said it was better than he'd expect from a 400/4 - would hate to be relying ona bad one !

Really nice bike that. Top job. What's the plan for the seat pad, could be a bit tough on the old family jewels. ;D ;D

Thanks Roy !

It's much more comfortable than you'd imagine, but that could well be down to my own padding !

That said, I now have a nicely trimmed foam pad to make longer journeys more comfy - just hope the rest of the bike stays together !

I know what you mean. When the bikes been down to every last nut and bolt you cant help but distrust it for a while. Every little noise or vibration has you thinking its about to fall apart. Never does though. Nice build.

Back in the day I had 4 different 400/4's and, apart from when wet,  the braking was pretty good, particularly compared with the 2-LS drum brake on earlier twins.

Very nice. I'll be going down a similar route myself with the 350/4.
Your front brake is a darn site better than mine... I ain't got one lol.

Nice job, well done.  It's good to see one that's a bit different.

Yes great to see something a bit different whist still retaining the iconic pipes.

Well done Andy, great to see them up and running, eh?

Quick brake story: I rode mine back 25 miles from its first post-rebuild MOT, pulled up on the drive to see brake fluid squirting out beneath me! Sorted it last weekend... simply the front brake light switch had worked loose (I'm sure I tightened it properly so not sure how it could vibrate loose... any  thoughts?). Anyway, all good now.

Cheers, D.

Nice build
I'd be proud of that, looks like it is ready for a good thrashing down a twisty road...

Let my son have a go on mine. I warned him - the brakes are not what you're used to and the rear does quite a lot overall.

First T junction we got to he said "the front doesn't do anything". Something of an exaggeration but if you're used to modern brakes....
