I am looking for feeler strips for the 550 tappet clearances of 0.08mm and 0.05mm had no luck on the net so far, anyone got a supplier please?

Cheers for this guys, may have to go with Louis ones but they are standard length and real fiddly to use so was ideally looking for long individual strips that I can bend at the ends if such things exist.

In workshops they used to have rolls.

I bought a set of cheap draper ones that are meant to fold into their case, but have simply bent the relevant ones to suit and leave them stuck out a bit ( appart from my dad helpfully streightened them and told me I need to store them more carefully as they had got bent in the drawer, doh! ) you can just unscrew the top bolt to loose the things off if you want individual gauges seperated.

Mr Moose you are probably right there, having the whole lot of 'em in your hand trying to get the 1 inch strip down into the tappet clearance is a nightmare! I used to work in a garage back in the 70's and we had 1ft long individual strips, sooooo much easier!

Would that be for Vauxhaul vivas by any chance? you had to adjust those with the engine runnining which foobarred the feelers

MatthewMosse has the right idea. If you don't separate them, the weight pulls them out of the gap you're trying to measure.
Tip of the day.
Get a decking screw from B&Q with a 3mm square drive. Cut the threaded part off, you only need the head. Fix the head to a screwdriver or something. You now have an ideal tool for adjusting tappets.

Yeah Opels and vauxhalls, all adjusted with engine running, so easy man!

I used to use feeler 'strips' to measure the clearances around Turbo Compressor Impellers. The strips came on a coil and I cut off about a metre at a time to feed around the Impeller/ Casing to check what the clearances were.
Another 'unusual' technique I remember at the time was micro peening areas of a shaft journal to bring up the outside diameter so that the sensors read zero run out when turned by hand. If the sensors detected excessive run out as the Gas Generator (Rolls Royce Avon Jet Engine) got up to speed, the whole Turbo Compressor shut down and it took ages to set it all up again, often needing to replace the main journal bearings.
We also had to allow for the Turbine Shaft to lift as it expanded so that it came into line with the Gas Generator Shaft and ran perfectly true within milliseconds.
You can't beat 'kidology'.

There are five 0.002" feeler gauge strips about one foot long.
They cost £10.49 with free carriage.
You can get them in most thicknesses and at this price you can experiment by cutting or bending a few till you get the perfect shape.
