After owning my Phil Read Replica for 16 years, I am going to reluctantly put it up for sale.
Every part of this bike has been stripped and rebuilt, frame and swinging arm powder coated, new drive chain and sprockets (530 x ring conversion) brand new Hagon shocks, New boyer branson ignition and coils. On the engine alone over £5500 in parts and workshop fees (re bore valve job etc)
The Engine has had the following
Complete strip, soda blast and stove enamel with original satin black,
Every bearing in the engine replaced including big end, and main bearings, new oversize pistons/rings. New valves and bronze guides, valve seats. genuine Honda seals, All gaskets and seal genuine Honda (yes I found genuine Honda head gaskets) New camshaft, and new (hard to come by) cam holders. The Camchain is a new heavy duty one much stronger than stock, plus all rollers and adjusters new. Crankshaft all deep cleaned and checked (work done by SEP engineering)
New heavy duty primary chains (£270.00 just for these) and tensioner that will no doubt last the life of the bike. All clutch plates and springs are new. The engine bolts all replaced with stainless steel, as are the engine mounting bolts. The exhaust down pipes are original, and immaculate been re chromed. The Phil read silencer is in perfect condition (and sounds superb). Oil pump fully overhauled and checked, replacement seals and new oil stopper valve (no more oil draining into the crankcase overnight) The bike does not use any oil, and performs superbly. The work done and parts used for this is virtually endless. The carbs have been ultra-sonic cleaned, and new Carb intake boots used (with stainless clips. I know every nut and bolt of this bike and also know it is a gem, reliable and a valuable classic as only 150 made.
I will be advertising it soon, so if anyone is interested please contact me. I will post some pictures of it on here, you will see it is excellent condition/paint job

I'm not normally a fan of the PRR but you have done an amazing job with that bike. Good luck with the sale. James

I can vouch for the condition of that bike, seen (and heard!) it many times, it's superb, if only I had a bit of spare cash at present, can't believe your selling it but good luck with the sale.
-
are you selling the spares separately?
-
I may do but will wait to see if who ever goes for the bike wants The spares, if they don't I will sell separately

Stunning. Simply stunning.

Guys if I put this on eBay dies anyone know the fees they charge?
-
Here's a link to their fees calculator, as far as I can tell if you had a starting bid of 7k and it went for 8.5k they would charge £252.85p , but have a go using the link I could be wrong!

Thanks Mark, some more pics attached

Stick it on as a classified with the best offer feature. Should cost you £24 max with large pics and no final value fees. You'll get the same exposure as an auction and can control the price / enquiries. Also it'll be advertised for 28 days at a time. Best way in my experience if you want to hold out to close to the asking price. If someone does make an offer via ebay - don't accept it until you've spoken with them as this will remove the listing once accepted. James.

Thanks James

eBay certainly gets the worldwide exposure you may be looking for but you do get the worlds worst buyers coming out of the woodwork at times and they can easily make it difficult for the seller.
Have you considered any of the specialised forums or magazines at all? It looks a great bike for that certain someone who wants to add to a collection of specials.
Not my sort of thing, but looking online elsewhere and seeing some of the poorer examples and their asking prices I would be surprised if yours went for as little as £8,500.

Great bike
I've always had good experience with car and classic . It's free and gets good exposure not as much as eBay but I find all enquiries are as genuine as they ever are selling vehicles...always worth a try first if someone googles the bike it will be on first page or second returned search....

Scroll down the referenced page and you'll find the selling fees for eBay motors, which are different from the 'normal' fees.
Should cost you a maximum of £45 as far as I can tell.
I think you should be able to specify a reserve price if you list as an auction.
Yes, there are some moron 'buyers' out there but there are also a lot of genuine ones too, and eBay gets the exposure.
If you get two or more people who want the bike you could get a very good price.

Many thanks for the info guys
-
Make sure you check fees ...I think £250 is a fixed top fee....if you go to auction.... I guess it's up to you if you think that it is worth it as you do get maximum exposure ...
I cannot remember if buy it now / best offer is fixed price insert fee... something is ringing in my head that they take a % of a best offer too
-
These are the quoted fees for eBay Motors listings:
Classified Auction Buy it now
Listing fees Insertion fees £14.99 £10.00 £10.00
Optional Gallery plus £2.99 Free Free
listing Subtitle £0.50 £0.50 £0.50
upgrades Listing designer Free Free Free
Scheduler Free Free Free
Add Buy it now - £2.99 -
Reserve price - £7.99 -
Final value fees Final value fee - 1% final selling price (min £20 max £35)
So as I understand it for an auction you would pay £10 Listing + max £35 Final Value + optional £7.99 for Reserve Price.
A Best Offer is treated as a Buy It Now at the accepted price with Final Value fee based on that figure.

Excellent info thanks for your efforts

And to finish this thread, somewhat belatedly...
I was fortunate enough to see Bytio's advert back in November and respond immediately. Thus I acquired a Phil Read Replica after many years of wanting to.
I wish to thank Bytio for helping me to understand what exactly I was buying, advice post-sale and for the spare parts that I hope (in the nicest possible way) never to have to use!
Cheers, D.
p.s. It does indeed sound brilliant!
-
congratulations! welcome to the clan. if youre selling any spares, put them on here first.
-
Drew, it was great to see it go to a good home, I still miss it, and of course happy to help if you need any info.
-
Thanks both and will do.
Cheers, D.
-
Congratulations on getting that bike Drew, the only downside is I see your in the south west, I'll miss seeing it in Matlock !
-
Ta muchly. I guess its appearance at South West events will have an opposite effect (and it may even appear up north too). Never say never, except twice in that sentence, eh?
Cheers, D.
