Title: Re-chroming old rims
Post by: Sgt.Pinback on April 09, 2016, 05:22:27 PM
Have a set of old CB750 K0 rims and had them new chromed.

What I paid for both:

de-chroming € 60,00
grinding € 120,00
new chrome: € 100,00

So that´s in total € 280,00 (GBP 226,00) + the old rims to have the old DID saved.

What do you think, is it worth, what do you pay?

Given you're looking at £200 for new scripted rims, I'd say that's decent value for the originality factor. How good was the finish Uli? Got any pictures you can share with us?

Picking 3 rechromed rims up from a new chromer in Leeds on Wednesday  who John Wyatt uses. Will let you know prices.

Allready in the Bunker.
Waiting for next project. I'm on a sandcast, casted away for decades.

Will take pics next week from the rims. They look nice but not perfect.

Sorry, pics done with the mobile phone.

I've no luck selling stuff here....

Will keep them for next project. Just wanted to know from you if it's worth going that way. I learned you don't get it done for less money.

I think its probably because what you are offering are very rare items Uli that only a limited number on here have a use for. This is why the 750K0/sandcast are such money pits. I often feel I was 5-10 years late in restoring one, as when you look back, prices went crazy at one point. In 2009 I got a complete front wheel with really nice original DID  rim and rare hub and disk, spindle etc  delivered to my door for 100GBP from the USA with no customs or VAT charges. Now you have the likes of DK telling me they sold a sandcast rear hub for over 600 last year ! I saw a complete & nice condition  750K0 rear wheel go for 69 GBP last year in Japan but the same person sold a K0 speedo for over 500 GBP  ...ridiculous.

Yes, Ash.

Maybe better to keep all that stuff for the next project or to have something to swap.
I restored my first K0 early 80th and I'm afraid I will never quite with that hobby.
We say: having is better than searching.

Anyway: can you see from the pics if the rear rim is the so called 2nd rounded version?

Very hard to say Uli.. If it looks round and no hint of squareness then it is fully rounded 1st version. I often wonder how much difference it would make to the overall value of the bike if it's fully rounded or not as it's even difficult for us 'anoraks' to tell. My main hate is the modern 'scripted' ones as they look awful IMHO. It also worries me when people take very, very, corroded ( and EVEN  with old water swishing around in the beaded part) and have them rechromed, as it is dangerous and often hard to balance properly.

Uli, if you plan on selling I'd definitely be interested in buying, as I'm sure Pete would

I´ll keep that in mind. When the KO I´m on  has reasonable ones, I can sell those here. Basis was not too bad, just some small rust spots.

BTW, that CB750 K6 in sunrise orange for € 7.750 is sold.

Just went to Leeds to pick up three wheel rims from a new (to me) chromer. His turnaround was 3 weeks but the 1st week he was mostly abroad on Holiday. Cracking deal for £65 each inclusive. He left the DID markings intact. The three rims were different sources . 1) 1.85x19 (40-hole front)  was bought from DK with nice but slightly faded chrome, 2) 18"x 1.85 (36 hole rear ) was free from here (Hondalking)  but I made a £10 donation and 3) 18" x 1.85 (40 hole rear ) was free from RGP750 via Chris on here.

Overall, well pleased with quality, Obviously 1) Was the best finish  as it had very little pitting to start with. Nice down to earth  bloke too, understood 'our language' &  the need to retain DID markings and not overpolish the spoke holes. John Wyatt is a customer, in fact he was due this morning to pick up some parts. Will deffo use him again. My advice though is get the best part you can to begin with ... obvious really but you know where I am coming from.

Also got a mountain of BZP parts back from the plating place  in Pocklington ...100 quid this time but lots of large parts that needed dip plating not barrel. He also chromed me 4 x CB750K0 exhaust stubs (that adapt head to downpipes), 1 x CB500K0  brake pedal and 1 x CB 500K0 kickstart (less knuckle).  Price for his chroming these items total was £30 but I had stripped the parts and polished myself to try to achieve original factory levels of finish.

Will photo at some point and post on here.

That sounds a very good price - I was getting quotes of £100+ to do one rim when I looked around late last year.
Had you prepped these rims or did you leave everything to the chromer?

Ash,

Did you strip the old plating off the rims and prepare them for replating or did the Plater do that for you?

£65 each seems a very good price.

In reply to last comments .. no I just gave him the rims as they came to me and he stripped and polished them But the other stuff (kickstart etc) I had stripped in Hull and polished myself. The guy in Leicestershire charged me £110 last year , for an 18" rear 36-hole and almost completely polished out the DID logo .. having said that the rim was pretty nice to start with but the chrome was absolutely  superb ...probably a bit too good really for Honda original finish. It's a mucky horrible job so hats off to all of them really.

BTW Chris not sure if that 500/4 rear rim came originally from you via Rich ..... if it did big thanks !

Pretty sure that's the one Ash. And I originally got it from yet another forum member, with some other parts, so it's done the rounds!
