For me the EBC pads and modern hoses from HEL made to measure, together give the braking needed.

Seabeowner, is the height measure screw/tube available somewhere? I did try to make one but not well. I also found that despite very careful measuring (the 22mm) my floats were too high and sucking in excess fuel, ‘soggy’ when blipping down also when idling causing stalling. I lowered them slightly and now she’s running better than ever.

Not sure but just wondering if one of those paint pens with the very small metal tip might help.

A hot air blower and a wood chisel as you can control it better than a Stanley blade and stop it ‘catching’.

As a side note after many months I found my throttle’s intermittent ‘soggy’ blip was likely due to some of the floats being too high causing excess fuel to be sucked through, even though they seemed to be at the 22mm position. It was ok during faster running, when fuel was getting used up, but slowing down with the throttle more closed, the excess fuel was building up and getting sucked through when subsequently blipping e.g. approaching a roundabout.

I also used POR15, the tin lid was so stuck I had to rip it off with mole grips. Prep is vital, I got hives from the fumes (on my exposed neck and forearms, went after about 3-4 weeks) so I’d wear a mask, cover up, and have a fan blowing the fumes out of the garage door. That was about 6-7 years ago and the inside of the tank is looking very sound and clean. Didn’t have holes just the start of fine rust. I covered the tap hole with a shaped piece of wood with 2 holes for the bolts and a gasket made from a cycle inner tube.

I only just saw this still posting. I thought mine were leaking from the float bowls but it was the fuel pipe T pieces 8 o rings all along. Just in case.
PS carbs off tips: air filter box out. Clutch cable free (if 500/4) Back and front carb clamps off. Plenum back 1/2 inch. Strip of wood across the back of the head to use a big screwdriver to gently lever the front rubbers. Lots of wiggling. Reassembling, a touch of red rubber grease in the rubbers to help.
New fuel hoses from DS.
I also found lowering the floats slightly has stopped intermittent ‘soggy blip’ on down changes, and stalling, due to too much fuel being sucked through.

I did mine recently and had taken out the filter box to move the air box back slightly. I took off the clamps at either end as it helps the rubbers squish, a trace of red rubber grease in the rubbers, and worked the front on first then upwards at the back bit by it. Pushed all on firmly (rubbers were soft) and clamps back on. Fired up instantly!

« on: August 09, 2025, 01:33:58 PM »
My 500/4 had the cam top breather pipe missing and I think an oil mist had circulated around causing filth to stick in lots of places. Also a drop of oil hanging off the sump fins but not really dripping turned out to be oil pump seals, but only while running, losing a lot of oil. Seals from Julie.
My fuel tap was letting by, not good. Seals from DSS and I used a little PTFE cycle grease just because it’s what I had to hand and it’s lasted well.

Hi has anyone come across this pipe, my original source, Tippetts, sadly closed and I haven’t been able to find any more.
Many thanks J

I bought the whole set with wires and bulbs for my 500/4 some years ago and worked well. Can’t remember where from but could have been the USA. If no luck a USA forum may well have a source.

Many thanks both. I ride it plenty, I guess it’s the valve guide oil seals, but it’s not bad enough for a top end overhaul. I’ll try the idle mixture anyway and see how that goes.
