A selfless act to use the wiring loom to clean the dishwasher - well done that man.

Also, excellent news re the missing shim that’s no longer missing.

The money you have now saved on a major engine rebuild and expensive dishwasher cleaning can be invested in a rear shock  ;D

Dave, make sure you mask the centre of the rear wheel where the wheel nut mounts.
I think you mean the side next to the disc and sprocket

No John, I meant the wheel nut side, but that does also apply to the hub mounting face  ;)

Forgot to add ….. definitely a later add speedo.  MPH speed is quite rare.  Don’t be tempted to move the clutch lever downwards to make it more comfortable than where it is now as it will hit the speedo case - most NC30s seem to have a damaged clock case !

Nice project Dave, and you’ll enjoy the finished bike.

I have a mostly original, very low mileage NC30 in the RC30 colours, and it’s fabulous to look at and fun to ride, although not quite so comfortable as an SOHC.

As you’ve likely already read, cooling is one of the NC’s weak points, so definitely check what comes out when you drain it, and make sure the rads are as clean as possible inside and out with straight cooling fins.  They don’t like sitting in traffic.  Water pumps can also fail and are nla, but are repairable.

The other big weak point you have already found with the reg rec cooking the battery.

Might be worth checking valve clearances whilst the cam covers are off.  They’re a pain to get to, so often overlooked in the maintenance schedule.  The previously mentioned Rick Oliver does a shim swap if he has stock of what you need to keep costs down if you need a few.

Rear shock is generally a bit on the soft side - swapping to one of Rick’s Nitron shocks made my bike much more pleasant to ride and allows the option to play with ride height’s, but not a budget friendly choice, so maybe one to think about after you’ve ridden it for a few miles.

Final thing to mention is the rear tyre size.  Bit difficult to get the right tyre size for the 18 inch rim these days, so keep an eye out for the identically styled 17” wheel from an RVF - quite rare and therefore expensive, but does offer tyre choices (adjustable ride height Nitron shock compensates for smaller wheel if you go that route)

Enjoy !

+1 for Esso Supreme.  No ethanol in most parts of the UK, but obviously a little more expensive than 95 - not that significant with limited mileage.

Check the choke lever’s fast idle adjustment also.  I had a similar experience on the shake down of my 400 and I hadn’t tightened the lock nut on the fast idle setting.

I have to agree with you Lobo !

I’m a petrol head who really appreciates a well engineered powertrain and I wanted to dislike driving an electric vehicle, but the reality is hugely impressive - certainly from a performance delivery perspective.  I recently had the opportunity to borrow a Ford Mach E for a week and whilst it had features I didn’t like, and it’s a style of vehicle that leaves me cold, I had to admit that the instant and effortless torque delivery is something an ICE just can’t compete with.

Charging via the public network was a pita and the range anxiety was definitely real for me in the short time I had the car.  It’s expensive and there are questions about future recycling etc, but honestly, after a week of driving, it’s easy to see how they will very quickly become the norm.

I have a neighbour a few doors away who still has his TL125 that he bought 45 years ago.  He didn't take to bikes, so it has only a few hundred miles on it and is sat in his workshop still waiting for it's first service !  Great looking little bike !

Check you have the brake side spacer fitted (item #154 in the parts illustration above) - I recall that the spacer is longer than the 1/4" you're looking for, but it does recess into the brg to give about that offset.

Welcome from a fellow NC30 owner !

You will enjoy the more sedate ride on a 70's SOHC and definitely find it easier to work on - plugs and valve clearances spring to mind as a pita on the VFR !

Andy,. Give the valve and seat a good clean and polish.  I use a cotton bud and a bit of Solvol to get the seat clean.

I can recommend the Delkevic system if you're not looking to retain the original styling.  It's good value, fits well and will bring out your inner hooligan (sounds great !!)

Ideally it's head off and a Wurth Time Sert, but they're not a cheap kit, plus new head gasket etc.  Faced with a similar problem a few years ago, I tried a Vcoil repair kit (Helicoil copy) without removing the head and all is well a few hundred miles later.  Obviously a risk with  cutting a thread without removing the head and potential to wind the insert out when removing the plug, but my experience has been good so far.
