Opportune post..I have same issues as posted above...I need complete trim for a "new" Tank I purchased over ten years ago AND need to address the rust problem on my old original tank. Can you let me know where to get the trim from ?  Thanks

As an aside I'm also chasing up seat cover and trim..

Those dowel holes are External and NOT used.!  They are used in the case manufacturing process only .

There is an alternative if you are prepared to make a small change to the bolt hole in the barrel. (Elongate it by about 4mm..
Benelli 500/654 tensioner. I took this one from my benelli .It's done 29000 miles...looks fine..
Much simpler...doesn't require adjustment.

(Checked Boyer Branson electronic ignition advance is ok, I.e. Full advance at 4,500 rpm. )

Did u check that  advance curve beyond 4,500...?  Using a strobe light.... If the motor is not missing at 4500 but just going flat on power , sounds like ignition retard....at 4500
