I am still looking for a 100mph speedometer if anyone has a spare one they want to sell!! (that fits a cm250t twin carb not the American single carb bike)

BUT I think there may have been a USA model with 80 mph Speedo and no Tacho .. just 'idiot' lights in the housing where the tachometer is normally.

Is yours a genuine UK supplied bike or an import?

hi, thanks for this and yes it is a UK bike (1981) with the twin carbs and 25bhp rather than the USA/Canada (1982) single carb and 17bhp which is why I was thinking it had the wrong speedo on it and certainly as it seems to be revving rather a lot for the speed it is showing. Looks like I will have to keep an eye open for a replacement.

anyone got a CM250T?
I have recently bought one and it has an 80mph speedo but I am told the 250 has a 100mph one and the smaller CM200T has the 80 mph one. presumably because the 200 has a maximum speed of 80 whereas the 250 is supposed to be capable of 85/90 so needs a higher speedo reading.
If you have one I would be grateful if you could check and let my know.

I have not been on the site for a while (cancer) but after 3 odd months of 'nil by mouth' and an operation I have lost a lot of strength and as I cannot manage the 750/650 anymore I thought I try a 250t.
I know most will say they like to rev but it's a bit much to me so I was thinking of changing the gearing a bit. The stock is 15/40 and 'Gear Commander' says going up to 17/40 will drop the revs by about 250 at 8k (60mph).
Anyone done this or similar??
It seems to me the options are :
1 - stay with 15/40 and put up with it;
2 - go to 17/40;
3 - try 18/40 (not sure it will fit in and I would have to change the chain) or
4 - go 17 but lower the wheel sprocket to say 35 ish (no idea what rev saving this is)
Any comments?

Can anyone tell me if the original speedo fitted to a 1981 CM250T is a max of 80mph or the 100mph one; both of which I have seen advertised for sale for the CM250T, I'm just interested how come a bike which is supposed to have a top speed of 85 would have an 80mph speedo.

I'd have thought 100 as it would do 80 and they always seemed to put extra MPH on there just to fool you that it could do it. It couldn't.
That is what I would have thought but it has an 80mph speedo which, it seems to me, would be for the 185/200 bike and the 100mph for the 250 and 400.

I do like the way your bike stands as you look at the photo - the seat & bars look comfy with a clean classic type design of the period.
Thanks. Luckily you cannot see the other side of the tank which has a scratch. I have to buy it as I have been in hospital for some months and am as weak as a kitten at the moment and cannot use the CN650Z or my Triumph as both are too heavy to move around.

A 'off on a tangent' question. Was the original fit of speedo a max of 80mph or the 100mph one; both of which I have seen advertised for sale for the cm250t.

Most were out of adjustment on the 500 mile service. I was regularly removing the clutch cover so I could move the adjuster on the splines. I was the only mechanic who used to do it, everyone else just removed the chrome screw in part, release the lock nut, let it drop and put it all back together again. Even at 500 mile they could clatter if not adjusted properly. I was also the only one to balance the carbs and they were always out of adjustment. Liked working on the 250N motor, so simple, so accessible.
What is the number of miles as stated in the workshop manual for the adjustment?

The engine has two balance shafts connected to the crank by a chain which has an adjuster, if you dont understand the system and adjustment procedure after reading the manual dont buy the bike as its a very important service item
It seems simple enough (famous last words) just to adjust it but a bit of a pain to have to replace the chain or plate.
