I have had excellent results with PJ1 fast black - https://www.mandp.co.uk/products/pj1-satin-black-engine-and-case-paint-400ml-522877 over 2 years now on my CBX1000C and still looks as sprayed.

Misc / Open / Re: Registering bike with USA title document.
« on: March 03, 2023, 05:19:45 PM »
I got a Title document with my CBX import. The problem was that although the bike was built in 1981 the title showed first registration as 1983 and the VJMC dating service wanted to use this date which would have delayed the historic taxation class for a few years. So I 'misplaced' the Title and sent photos of the VIN Plate to VJMC for the dating certificate. Worked a treat so I agree with Bryanj's comment, dont use it.

I guess it depends on values - just renewed for 1st February 2013 with Peter James on my CB400 & CB500 for valuations of 5k & 4 K comprehensive on limited mileage 1500 miles  pa for £137.48 I have one years NCB as it had been 12 or so years since my old NCB lapsed.

Thats funny Ted I have just renewed with Peter James to the exact amount as you £137.48, A CB550K3 and GL1000K2 with 3 and 6 years NCB, I am 64. They must just use a standard rate for most instances.

Still think its a great price so never even bothered trying to find an alternative.

I love the programme and watch it avidly, dont really mind Henry. The only thing I would say (and I know each to their own etc) is I dont get his fascination with British bikes of the 60's and 70's era.

He is 5 years younger than me and my recollection of youth and especially into the 80's British bikes were just completely uncool, personally would not have been seen dead on one. So I cant understand why he waxes lyrical about riding them in his youth at all as he would only have been a teenager in the early 80's.

No in testing once I had the coils off the bike they were completely dead no output at all. I spent a lot of time at the roadside and at home working through connections etc. I had enough knowledge by then to realise I had no spark but was still getting power to the coils and a switching input from the points system.

With a new set of coils the bike fired right up.

Yes I checked over everything at the time but could not find an issue. Replaced the coils with new and the bike ran great for the next three years before I sold it, still around today from DVLA records.

Just very unlucky I think. Worst part was getting a tow from my Dad in his MK2 escort home. Scariest thing I have ever done on a bike, going round corners the car was pulling me over. Madness of youth, but at the time getting someone to transport the bike home was very difficult and the garage I had bought it from (Rogersons of Orell) were not interested at all as the bike was out of warranty.

It is so rare for coils to fail electrcaly that i cant remember a set! the wires do get old but Ash'fix cures that.

I was really unlucky my original K2 was just over a year old back in 1979 when both coils suddenly failed leaving me stranded, so it can happen.

On my current K2 I went to a Dyna electronic system with Dyna 3 ohm coils and bypassed the ballast resistor. Been in place for 4 years and never missed a beat.

Beautiful job you must be very proud. Hope you get the carbs sorted ready for a ride before the weather gets too bad.

Remember what you do to your bike is entirely up to you and your tastes!!!

Well done.

Ken mentioned earlier in the thread about getting the bottom of the tensioner sitting correctly in the pocket at the bottom of the crankcase. I made the mistake of fitting the barrels first on my rebuild then found I could not get the tensioner in place correctly.

Just make sure it is in place, only really way you see this is by looking up from the bottom with the sump removed.

You will love the noise a SuperTrapp makes and you can tune it with more or less discs.

I have a set on my CBX and just cant get enough of the noise -

I saw a crate being opened in a 70s dealership with a partly assembled 400/4 inside. I cant remember how much assembly was required but would this mean the bike would have to be fully assembled to test on a rolling road then disassembled?

I personally think we have it the wrong way round, instead of strangling economies and making people poorer and face greater hardship which inevitably means they will be become more desperate and make the problem worse we should be using our greatest asset science to fix the problem.

Find a way of neutralising greenhouse gasses, scrub the atmosphere of C02 and other nasties, work together to cool the earth down using the knowledge we have accrued rather than the taboos some of us like to preach to. The current approach, wind and solar energy, electric cars etc just are not going to work so stop the loony brigade taking us down the path to economic and social destruction in the name of salvation.

Jeez now that was a rant wasnt it!

Out & About / Ayr Classic Motorcycle Show
« on: June 25, 2022, 11:23:35 PM »
Had a great day out today as part of the Ayr Classic motorcycle clubs show at the Robbie Burns Museum Alloway.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Some wonderful bikes, gorgeous 400 four absolutely immaculate and a GPZ900 that had only done 1024 miles and looked brand new. My CBX got a lot of attention despite being filthy after riding through some terrible weather to get to the venue. Lots of requests to hear the bike running which I duly delivered  ;D sorry nothing can beat the sound of a six through a relatively open exhaust the Harley's in the background had no chance (no offence intended  :D)

In all a great day, venue, people and overall weather
