I used Gates Fuel Pipe as it was fitted to  my 500 by Gerben iirc. .

When I first fired up my 500 after it's full rebuild it ran great, next time it ran like a pig.
The temporary petrol tank that I bought online came with petrol pipe that I used.
The pipe went sticky to the touch over a few days.
Carbs were full of black bits from the pipe.

I was gutted and demoralised to have to remove the carbs, dismantle them and clean them all over again.
I had to leave it for a couple of weeks as I was so ***** off  having  to do it all again.

Another unnecessary thread. It's all in my overview, published here innumerous times.
Mr Sanitizer, you are not the site moderator, on what authority do you have the temerity to say this thread is unnecessary?

We are here to help, not criticize.

« on: October 11, 2026, 07:52:29 PM »
When I dismantled my original  throttle shaft on my 500 it had been removed before. Whoever drilled out the original guide pin also broke the bronze type bush breaking it in half.

Ken kindly offered me a restored ceramic coated  bracket.
I can't remember if the original hole was threaded or if I threaded it.
I found some threaded pins online that I fitted, a bit of work with file to get the tip to fit the groove.
Too tight and the shaft will not rotate, too loose and it fails to keep the shaft in position.
It's a shame new bushes aren't available, new shafts in SS are sometimes available from Max.
My laptop crashed a couple of weeks ago, I've lost most of my email addresses.

C.W.C  fitted my 400 front tyre the wrong way round.
To their credit they collected my front wheel, returned it a few days later, all f.o.c.

I do know that on my 400 the rear tyre (Dunlop) is marked with a rotation arrow for rear fitting , when viewed from the left side follows the anti-clockwise rotation of the wheel.

My front tyre however is effectively reversed for front fitting, to maximise the grip for braking as opposed to accelarating on the rear tyre. There is a marking on the right side showing an arrow for front fitting

iIt could be that some tyre brands  are constructed differently.

That rear tyre is definitely wrong.

I used Wendy's Hair spray to make sure they stay in place, particularly for the throttle side.

I used Meths to clean the bars / throttle tube.

I've read good things about the new BSA 650 Goldstar, a member in the SD site runs one.

Iirc cost about £5k new in 2025, lots of low mileage used ones about.

I do find it confusing that the 500 & 550 are grouped together here.
My 500 needle was in the middle when dismantled so that's how it went back.

I thought that for a UK bike, the middle position was correct, US  models were one ring position richer.

The engine should sell online - ought to fetch £200.
With realistic or no reserve the bike should sell even in the current market.

An Update

While I had the carbs off, I also checked all the slider needles; they had the circlip on pos 2,

When you say position 2, is that from the top of the needle or from the bottom?

The 550 might be different, my 500 has 5 positions, I used position 3.
