I had problems with aftermarket float valves leaking too - after several attempts, many rounds of tweaking float height, I put the original float valves back in - after ultrasonic cleaning them - polished the ends with a bit of wire wool - no leaks after that - also - worth trying to rig the carbs up so you can test for leaks before fitting back on the bike - I suspended mine over a washing up bowl and filled the float bowls - save you a lot of time if you do get leaks -

Thanks for the comments - Does sound like it is just a blanking screw - It was only once I got both the longer screws out holding the body together that I realised I probably didn't need to extract it at all - all the screws were really badly chewed - I suspect from non JIS screwdriver being used in the past - I had to cut a slot across this little one - and when i finally got it out and saw how short it was assumed it had snapped off - but there was nothing left in the housing - so I expect its just a blank and is not long enough to reach into the throttle tube - as an aside - fitted new throttle cables (after the 'pull' cable snapped ) - and the difference in how the throttle is working is massive - the old cable must have been causing massive drag before it let go and snapped the nipple off ! - a real eye opener as to how much influence the cables have on the feel of the bike -

Does anyone know the part number for the small screw between the throttle cables ( bar end ) on the underside of the body - I had a real job getting this out as the head was chewed up - I have looked at the Honda drawing/parts list but cant see this on the drawing- I have found the part numbers for the longer screws that hold the body together - but this screw has got me stumped - its only about 8mm in length - not even sure what purpose it serves ?- locks the throttle tube in place ?

I stripped the carbs completely - following the same link posted above from orcadian http://www.vintagebikebuilder.com/cb350-400f-carb-rebuild-demonstration.html - really easy to follow guide - I had never stripped carbs before and to be honest was really daunted by it - in the end - really enjoyed learning how to do it - I purchased a small 3 litre ultrasonic machine that I used for all the small brass components - and put a liquid dishwasher tab in the water as a detergent/cleaner - worked really well at 30mins cleaning - then the bodies, caps, float bowls I used a big industrial size ultrasonic machine at work - although just a warning - it turned the bodies a darker grey as a result of the process, I then had them professionally vapour blasted and they came up like new - I also had to rebuild a couple of times as I couldn't get the aftermarket float valves to seal properly resulting in leaking carbs - once re-fitted (cleaned) OEM parts all OK- good luck with it -

Hi my Name's Mac - thanks for letting me join - I have already had some help on forum which is greatly appreciated, thought I'd catch up and introduce myself - from West Mids UK - currently restoring CB400F - PO converted it to Cafe Racer, so not one for the purist - I have loved 400/4's since I was a kid in the 70's - delighted to finally own one - learning most of the stuff I need to do as I go along- although having tackled ( and sorted ) the carbs - feel confident enough to have a go at most things on it -

Thank you Bryanj - I followed your bench sync process ( thank you very much for that ) - as I mentioned in prev post its running very rich, starts without choke, and the idle screw is screwed so far out that its no longer in contact with the bar - I am just about to pull the carbs off again as the idle is rough/surging (as well as the spark issue on CYL2) - in your opinion - with the idle screw in this position ( ie, redundant ) , is it possible i have screwed up the carb rebuild please ? apologies if its a bit of a how long is piece of string question - I don't really want to take the carbs apart again if I can help it - but I am sort of convinced something not right ? - could the over rich issue be the air / mix screw ? - currently set all four at 1.5 turns out and untouched at this point -appreciate any thoughts

Update : Cylinder 1 compression OK - and getting a spark - turns out the lack of vacuum on CYL 1 when using 4 bank carb sync gauges = blocked adapter  - last week I only tested the gauge by sucking on the tube - swapped the adapter over and got vacuum on cylinder 1 OK - so down to cheap crap vac gauge set - lesson learned - combination of cheap gauge and my dumbness - Had it running this morning - idle is a bit erratic with a bit of surging - but now CYL 2 intermittent not firing - pulled the plug - and intermittent spark/weak yellow - any ideas on this ? coils ? - if I remember the coil on 2 is paired with 3 ? which is running OK - its running what looks like a very old Piranha electronic ignition -

sounds like a similar bit of kit to what I have used for the sync - I did think that the adapter on Carb 1 might be dodgy so swapped it for another one from the kit and no different - on carbs 2/3/4 they worked a treat and they were pretty close from bench sync to start with - just Carb#1 gauge not registering any vacuum -
