I decided it was junk and nothing to loose.  Started with 80 grit then 240 and 120 and then on the polishing mop with coarse compound.  Just need to do the rest of it now

The gouge is barely visible and should hopefully disappear with  a bit more rubbing with 240. Probably go down to 600 grit all over before the final polish.

Just need a good day outside to then do the final polish all over, too messy in the garage.

Ok thanks folks, just need to find a couple of  good ones on the working engine and continue polishing.  And yes they seem to get a bit  chewed up by ham fisted mechanics.

Looked at the Chinese ones, they look to be sand blasted or powder coat with quite a rough finish.

I  just use a 3/8 drive 6 point socket to get them off and just put a 6 point ratchet wrench on the Santa clause wish list.( Don't need anymore socks!). Is  there better way to undo them.  Have seen  them in the past where they are completely rounded off and someone has  tapped them loose with a chisel.

That 350 cover looks like an original finish and probably been nowhere near UK salty roads.

I tried with a spare cover from a spare engine but it's a bit gnarly to polish up. I though I was ahead of the game in being able to get this cleaned up and just swap it over when I do the tappet covers and valve clearances. Would have to remove a lot of material to get rid of the gouges and chips.

Just have to hope that the one on the bike is a better starting starting position.

I have never found honda castings that great for polishing compared to say Kawasaki.

Anorak's Corner / tappet cover finish

Been cleaning up the tappet covers. Many years ago they got painted as part of the rocket cover but  easily damaged with routine spannering and now looking a bit scruffy.

Cleaned these up with various grades of wet 'n' dry down to 2400 grit followed by a tickle on the  bench polisher.  Way too shiny.

Has anyone perfected the technique to get close to original finish ?

What was the original finish on the 400F breather cover, painted same as rocket cover or bare metal like the sump.

I still have a spare frame that's on a Q  plate, no idea what to do with it other than cut it up and make an engine stand.  Can't see any one wanting it unless it the last on on earth or they're going racing.  It was originally an ex racer that had been put back on the road with a right mismatch of bits.

Best tools are the ones you make yourself.

This one for getting the front bearing retainer ring out.  Threaded in the middle so that a piece of threaded rod goes through to the other side to clamp it in place so it doesn't cam out and chew up the slots. Angled bar gives a flat face for whacking with a mallet.

Some of the discarded bits I bet over the years would be ultimately valuable as good stock diminished for things of possibly unique manufacture.

I know everything can't be kept, but sacrifice to the "drama" angle always annoying.

That's why my loft is full of stuff that might come in handy one day.

3 tanks up there somewhere, one has a lump of resin rattling around inside, one has a small dent and one has a small hole where an aftermarket seat base  rubbed through. What you you do with them?  There are pattern new tanks available which is a better starting point for anyone in need.

Yes - seen Alan's video, that's why I originally asked about flexoid as a replacement for the old stuff that has asbestos in it.

Improving  my skill set.  The day will come when bits like these are scarce or no longer available and all you can get will be ones at silly prices on fleabay.  My dad used to make a lot of gasgets for small two strokes out of copper sheet or a thick paper hoover bag.

Careful which gaskets you make, Honda work the gasket thickness into any clearance required, hence why using liquid gasket dont work

Thanks, I have heard about the problems of using too thin material on the clutch cover causing the kick start to bind a bit, don't see any issues with the sump on a 400?

Just wondering if anyone has any comments regarding this flexoid oil resistant paper for making gasgets.

Planning on getting the sump off this winter and having it vapour blasted to tidy it up a bit and as far as I know it's probably it's the  original gasget, I re-used it last time I had the engine out 20 years ago to replace the cam and primary chains.

I have roll of old gasget material but it contains asbestos so not keen on using it.

Dave.

Hats off to you. Bloody hard work for a living. I just play at it.

I was on a science vessel so it was 18 hour days, with 2 hours of doing nothing followed by 30 minutes of  panic at each station.  Nice in the summer but not so much fun in winter when it got a bit lumpy and all of your kit was trying to jump off the bench.

Nice looking rib you have there, though not my favourite mode if transport, used to jar my back when we went airborne and landed in a trough.

A bit more scenic around the Tay, compared to where I used to  end up when I worked at sea. Grimsby fish dock, Boston and kings Lynn docks don't compare. Nearest I got was probably the Bass Rock the into Tweed dock to jump Ship.

I grow and hybridise agaves.

A bit of a spiky obsession. You might think nipping a bit of skin in pliers hurts. Repotting these can rip you to shreds if you don't pay attention.

Pollination can be a challenge.
