Just in case you disappear down the same rabbit hole that I did,A few years ago, I had similar problems. Suspecting float issues l cleaned the seats and fuel galleries etc, I set the float heights carefully, assembled and it still overflowed. Ordered a float needle set & seats with some rubbish off fleabay. Didn't know about this forum then.  I had a spare set of carbs from my own project bike and replaced the floats and needles and it still overflowed! I was getting pretty desperate by now, so I did some research and found a site from the USA (I can't find the link sorry) where a chap, was over hauling his own carbs. He mentioned checking overflow tube in the bowl. Knowing damn well it couldn't possibly be that, I checked it anyway and guess what, it was the overflow tube! I placed the bowl on top of my bench and supported it, poured petrol in it below the level of the tube and petrol poured out of the overflow. I have read that some people suggest that the brass tubes can crack through age and vibration. Someone else suggested it maybe cleaning using an ultrasonic bath, but it's not entirely unknown. Maybe worth a check if you haven't already.

My 80 Year old neighbour was quite lucky by comparison. He bought a Kawasaki adventure style bike from them and was waiting for the V5 to come through. Then he discovered that they had gone bust a few days after purchase. He's had to apply for the V5 directly from the DVLA and has cost him £25. It doesn't sound right to me that you can be the registered and provable owner of a vehicle and yet have it treated as an asset because clearly it isn't 'their' asset, it's yours. They can't sell it, as it's not theirs to sell. However as we know, the law is an ass, which is often practised by assholes
Some good legal advise called for methinks.

Since I bought what is now my third CBF500 six months ago, I've noticed with this one, the gear change is very clunky and not very Honda like. There is also a fair bit of transmission noise too.
The clutch felt a bit odd the other day and I spotted the cable was starting to fray around the clutch lever, so I ordered a new pattern one @ £10 as opposed to the Honda item at £50!
The first the thing I noticed was the gear change has lost it's clunkiness. It has to be something to do with the adjustment, but I've set it as I always do. I'm guessing the old cable must have been stretching during operation and not fully disengaging the clutch hence the clunkiness. The transmission whine is still there. Has anyone had the same experience?

The Jota is a story in itself. But yes, I still have it. When I was in school, my teacher was into bikes and knew I was becoming interested/obsessed too. I asked him what bike he would buy if he had the money. He said easy Robert, a Laverda Jota. I'd never heard of one, but the next day he brought in a magazine with a picture of one. I might not be the sharpest knife in the draw, but it took me a millisecond to know that one day I MUST own one. I had to wait 9 years before I did.

In my youff, my first sort of renovation/ restoration was a Suzuki GS550. It was looking a bit shabby and losing power so I decided to go all in. I took the frame to be powder coated and I called them a couple of weeks later to ask if it ready. I was surprised to be told they can't powder coat over filler! I paid them a visit and sure enough on the down tube in front of the side panel there was filler. After removing the filler we found a big dent. I asked them to just powder coat it. I made a few inquiries with a friend and found out that a car had reversed into the bike and it had been sold on to a well known breakers in Wrexham, who I bought it from as I was on my uppers at the time. I stripped the engine and found 4 burnt exhaust valves probably because there wasn't any clearance in the valve tappets, so that solved the power loss mystery. My boss went home for lunch every day so I could count on him being away for at least an hour, so I used to bring in parts every day and clean them. I got a mate to respray the tank and panels and to be fair, although not perfect, it looked pretty good. Better still the missing power was back. Things improved for me considerably during this time as I changed jobs, my wages were literally doubled and my commuting costs were a fraction of what they were. So I decided to let go of the Suzuki and buy a Jota. A friend who had done me a lot of favours but would never take a penny off me inquired about the bike. I told him about the dent but he was cool about it and I offered it to him for a Pound a CC. (£550) He said it was way too cheap which I knew, but it was a good way of repaying him for the favours he'd done me. I warned him to run the bike in as I had only just rebuilt the engine, he promised faithfully he would and off he went. Exactly a week later he called me from hospital and asked me if I could help his mate collect the bike as it was in a field. He's been going round a corner almost flat out and lost it and he was in hospital pretty beat up and had a broken leg. The bike faired even worse than he did, since it had bounced and was literally bent in half and was written off. All that effort gone to waste in a few seconds. I didn't have a lot of sympathy and reminded him of his promise.

I suspect many people go into bike restoration with rose tinted spectacles. But the fact is, they cost a lot of money to restore. In the world of classic cars the situation is far worse. I think very few people make any money from either. My own view is that if you enjoy restoring it and you can take satisfaction from your hard work as well as knowing that you've saved a classic bike from becoming spare parts, then it's money well spent. Some people throw vast amounts of money away on clothes, gambling, TV, whatever, but at the end of the day restoring bikes actually gives you something , even if it's cost a lot to get there.

Sadly I forgot to take a picture of the front of the little Honda SS50, it looked like a anti dive mechanism. From the side the external damper looks like it connects to a link of some sort

Went to Amlwch Classic Car & Bike show today. Sadly the weather Gods weren't in a good mood today as it was raining on and off. This no doubt impacted on the number of entrants. I did toy with the putting one of my bikes or cars in, but the forecast was rubbish, so I thought better of it.
However a BIG well done to the owners of these two Honda's and a Matchless who braved the elements and I thought them very worthy of inclusion here.

It's the only bike I've ever had where the speedo is showing 60mph when the bike is still on the stand. Incredible!

Compared to some on here this probably isn't very spectacular, but I had my first ride out on my lovely new Honda 400/4 today. Didn't go too far as she's had a complete restoration and a rebore, so I'm running her in.
Couple of minor teething problems, but nothing much. I just feel so lucky to be on a 400/4 again.
Stopped at a garage to pick up fuel and a chap said to me, your bike is beautiful mate and I don't even know anything about motorbikes!
Zero marks for photographic composition but I took this picture outside a local derelict chemical works. (Amlwch) Back in the day when petrol was petrol, it used to be part of the Octel group and I believe they extracted bromine from sea water and sent it to Stanlow at Ellesmere Port refinery to be added to petrol along with tetrahedral lead to improve it's anti knock qualities.

When I joined this forum, I think I mentioned that I had a CB400F that has been a project for a long long time. I had a couple of spending spree's in recent times, but after yet another house move, I'm not really any closer to finishing it. I'm one of those people who always seems to have lots of unfinished projects around, sadly I now know this is connected to my ADHD which didn't get diagnosed until my late fifty's. Over the years I've had a lot of bikes, but there are three main ones that I still lust after, a BMW R90s, a Moto Guzzi Le Mans and a yellow Honda CB400F. Reading the forum a few weeks ago, I was reading some messages posted by 'teenybop1' AKA as Peter Mackin about selling his lovely yellow CB400F. A growing realisation that I'm not getting any younger was nagging at me and I might not achieve my dream Honda. The result being after a brief exchange of messages and telephone conversation I'm delighted to announce that I am now the proud owner of Peter's beautiful yellow Honda CB400F2. My bike courier DWT courier services (who I can highly recommend for anyone who needs one in North Wales) was gobsmacked when he saw Peter's bike and said, if I changed my mind about it, he would buy it off me! I will probably put my old unfinished project up for sale to give myself more room or I may hang on to it for when I retire in a couple of years and I can devote more time to my projects. So my sincere thanks to Peter for making my dream Honda happen. Merry Christmas to all
