I ordered pair of hagon shocks for my Royal Enfield Continental GT535

To my surprise, Hagons called me to discus my weight, pillions weight, riding style and then sent me shocks to suit

I bolted them on and they have performed admirably for many years

I do confess, my rationale for replacing the original shocks was because they were hideous yellow and gold, with a remote reservoir that looked out of place on a retro cafe racer!

Did you get the version with compression adjustment etc?

They were for a 29bhp Royal Enfield Continental GT535  so no

Pre-load adjustment only, but you do get a C spanner with the shocks !

Look to be off a 550 as the 500 didn’t get the extra caliper mount on the right hand fork slider that yours clearly has. Most likely 550f1 as the f2 had longer sliders iirc.
Fork sliders would appear to be the later type off the CB550F or even the CB750F1 or K7.
If you're not aiming for a 100% standard bike, I'd stick with them as they are actually better forks than the early type.
Might be worth checking the overall length from the top of the tube to the axle centre and comparing it with the original type fork

By way of explanation, the fork leg in the image is actually a LH one, the RH one is on the left, so that the standard Honda caliper sits behind the forks (pic below)

When I purchased the project, the LH fork leg had been machined (bodged) to take a mounting bracket and a caliper & master cylinder from a childs minimoto fitted (no, I'm not joking!)

Whilst the machining damaged the brake mounts, the strength of the fork lower was not affected. With it being fitted on the right side, it's not even visible

With the standard caliper the braking is adequate, helped by a fair bit of weight reduction from standard (pic below)
So I was thinking of fitting an AP Racing set up - I already have one on my K4 race bike

I ordered a new LH fork leg for a CB500 Four and found it too short (the ebay seller allowed a return and refund) hence the reason for my original post to ascertain which leg it might be

The assistance from all of you, has led me to either try to get a LH leg to match, or go for the CB750 option as a pair

Reference was made to "keeping it standard" whilst I for many on here that is important, and I get that. However, at 71 years old I'm still into my race bikes........

Thanks, as above there are no markings, is the one in the picture measuable? If so, could you please let me know?

By way of explanation,  I'm looking to upgrade the front brake, probably to an AP Lockheed set up, which will require a bit of machining to the fork lowers

Hi,

I have a completed project based on a US import CB500 Four (1972)

The fork lowers are slightly longer than standard - top to bottom 357mm (just over14 inches)

There's no markings on them, they are 35mm and work just fine

Can anyone throw some light on what the part numbers are or what model they are from?

Alternatively, can some let me know the length of a standard 1972 CB500 Four fork lowers.

My friend's Norton Commando has a newer and different front disk and calliper, I think from a modern Honda.  I have seen that this is quite a common practice and having ridden the bike I can confirm that it is a massive improvement to braking performance.

Has anyone seen or know of a suitable conversion that can be applied to 500/550
 that does not require changing the front forks, i.e. a disk that can be fitted to the standard wheel and a calliper that can go on the standard forks using a bracket as an adapter?

On my CB350 K4 race bike I have an AP Racing Caliper (similar to the Comando one ) the bike has been fitted with the later cb360 forks

The front fork has been slightly modified and a mounting plate fitted. It's a tight fit but from my experience it's way better than the original honda

In the UK there are a number of companies offering the mounting plates and fork mod - I believe there are Grimeca calipers that are the same but cheaper...

I also gave the AP Racing adjustable master cylinder but many of the Classic racers use the pattern one from David Silver

The project came with a front master cylinder and caliper from a mini-moto! Just one of the many bodges.....

Swapped the fork legs so the caliper sits behind the forks, had the disc drilled, fitted a braided hose and modern pads. With the reduction in the bike's weight the braking feels ok, but I  have an AP lockheed set up I could fit, if I think it needs improving

There seems no issues with the caliper behind the fork (I use a digital speedo, so the speedo drive is not an issue). I did the same on my TZ Yamaha and it's been working great for a many miles

For carburation I upped the pilots by 1 and the mains by 3 and it pulls really smoothly throughout the rev range. There is a slight popping on the overun,  so a little bit of tweaking is needed

Where did you get the exhaust, is it hand made? They really add to the look👍

I believe they were from NRP Exhausts, but customised from standard (the originals would be shorter to allow access to change the wheel)

And they say "never buy an unfinished project" and they're absolutely right!

As for a double unfinished project - never, ever, ever - this is from personal experience!

Completed 2 days before I headed to the Isle of Man TT races, 'Hayley Honda' performed admirably around the TT mountain course

If you want it original that's how it is.
No body in the 70's wanted black plates it just aged the bikes .
It's just a new modern trendy thing
