What do the spark plugs look like? Are they black and sooty, clean and dry, clean and wet etc.

Tricks & Tips / Re: Spark plug stuck-corroded-broken.
« on: July 06, 2026, 01:42:56 AM »

I prefer a thread chaser rather than tap as a decent tap will cut fresh threads or diminish original structure with ease, if not aligned or "indexed" correctly with original thread cut. Chaser is kinder in preservation of original as it has thread form, plus clearing flutes to withdraw corrosion etc all without specifically cutting, accidentally, fresh head casting material.

A "back tap" indexes off the (hopefully) good threads at the bottom of the hole, and works very well to repair cross-threaded threads:

CB350/400 / Re: 350/400 miles before rebuild

Perhaps I should rephrase the question:
What is the minimum mileage that can be expected from the small fours before major work is required?

CB500/550 / Re: The actual fuel hight in these 550 K3 Carbs
« on: May 27, 2026, 06:09:56 PM »
I have been trying to find if Honda ever said what the fuel height should be in the carbs of a CB550 K3.

Honda does say how far the float should dangle down ....  22mm I think.

But on my KZ750 twin I use a clear tube stuck in the bottom of the carb bowl and this gives the actual fuel height, As shown in the pic below.

(Attachment Link)

And Kawasaki says what the fuel level lines up with.  All very helpful.

Does anybody know if honda ever did this for the 550 K3.  I now need to check the float heights .... It would be interesting to try this with the carbs still on the bike.

The fuel level with the clear tube should be about 3mm below the top of the bowl.

CB350/400 / 350/400 miles before rebuild

How many miles are the wee Hondas getting before any major engine work is required? A fellow on the US forum, Ofreen, has logged over 170,000 miles on his F0 750 with the original engine. Who has the most miles on a baby four? :)

Interchangeability / Re: CB 750/550 Front Caliper
« on: April 17, 2026, 06:31:50 PM »
So what your saying is if I understand you correctly that 750 calliper won't fit onto a 550 ?

Actually, you can use a 750 caliper on a 550 if a 750 rotor is used, provided the 750 caliper uses the later mounts. This will give additional braking due to the larger 296mm vs 276mm diameter.

I guess that after 4 or 5 failures the system decides that I'm too stupid to be AI and gives me a simpler question? ;)

Looks like I need more posts to stop the verification questions. For some reason April isn't the current month, nor March or June?
