Thanks for the reply…. I’ve been doing the same. Looking through the exploded diagrams and parts lists for all the internal (to the engine) items.

The item you highlight is the cam chain adjuster and tbh, when I removed the assembly it looked like all parts were present. However, this is also my first CB550 strip so although the cam chain assembly looked complete and is now bagged up and stored, I’ll revisit it tomorrow and see if it could be part of it.

After buying the bike, I’ve only ran it in the garage to work through the PO’s long standing carb problems and then again to fit another set that Ian supplied me with.
I have done no maintenance, just straight into the stripdown process so if it is from that area, it could have been there for a long time.

I can see no shear or fatigue points on the offending item so it could be a loose item from that area…. or not 🤔

Like I said, I’ll take a look at the cam tensioner assy tomorrow and see if it could be a stray part.

Thanks again 👍

Started to clean the crankcases halves, barrels, head etc today prior to vapour blasting.

Dropped the sump pan into a washing bowl with a cup full of petrol in, started degreasing it and as I worked my way through the sludge caked into the ribs in the bottom of the sump, I could hear a metallic noise as I brushed away in the petrol / oil mix???

The metallic sound turned out to be this….

Does anyone have any idea what it is??

Thanks in advance

You walk your path and I walk mine.

On items I deem critical, I’ll use genuine when possible.
When it’s an item that I deem not, I won’t.

Life is the sum of all our choices

And my choice in this case would be to buy cheap.

I’m 64, have plenty of time (well, until the clock stops ticking anyway) and enjoy the process of fettling. If it was a brake, tyre or final drive chain question, my response would be different and go quality any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I still cast durability doubts over 50 y.o. NOS oil seals, O rings, inlet manifolds and the like. Unless it’s not available from a bearing factor / seal supplier as its manufacturer special (Suzuki GT series clutch pushrod oil seals for example), I don’t buy NOS oil seals or O rings for any of my rebuilds.

It’s just a job like any other,,,,,
Prepare your tools and your mind.
Realise it’s going to take some time.
Not difficult.

I’d buy the cheap versions any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Easy to replace when they do fail and I can probably buy 3-4 sets for the price of the NOS ones.

I don’t know what the NOS ones are made of but if they do have a rubber element to them, the NOS moniker doesn’t make me giddy and want to buy them. In fact, it does the opposite.

I’ve just bought 4 cheapy Chinese inlets for my bike, they fit perfect and the bike ran fine upon testing. If they last 3 years at 1/4 of the price of NOS. They’ll see my riding days out if I do the maths.

CB500/550 / Re: Guidance needed - Inner Valve spring seat
« on: November 04, 2026, 11:57:36 AM »
It does beg the question though on why have them on the inner springs.

I do get the outer shim as the hardened spring sits directly onto the soft aluminium head.

Being all things Japanese with JIT, Kaizen, 7 deadly wastes…. etc.

If the inner seat was to extend the length of the inner spring, why not just grind the spring to the required length?
I can’t see the spring being any harder than the valve guide so is there a need to protect the surface with what is essentially a shim?
And why, if you are a Japanese company obsessed with reducing waste, would you add a shim if it’s possibly not needed? - Cost
Why would you add a shim that takes effort and could be left out by mistake - People time and potential rework cost?

Why should I even care?? 😂

It just seems a strange addition to me

“They do stick to the guides with oil film”

Ha!!!! Don’t I know it…..  must have spent an hour getting the last two outer ones to give up their love for stiction!

This did make me question if the inners were actually there but alas, they are not.

Thanks for the feedback Bryan, unless I hear from someone with a pretty strong argument to have them, I’ll save the cash for other items I’ll need 👍

Cheers
