I find inter dental brushes of great use in cleaning out jets etc. cheap, easy to source and come in various sizes. Being nylon they don’t harm the brass surfaces as well which is something which concerns me with guitar strings.

Don’t forget to change the engine oil and filter Johnny. Any contamination in the old oil can eat away at the shell bearings which can cause problems later in its life. A short run after changing the oil will get it around the engine and help to avoid this problem. I’ve had to sorn my bike as my present health means I can’t ride till at least next March. I plan to take it for an MOT on April 1st and tax it the same day so I’m ready for the summer. All things being well I may finally get some riding done next year.

Iirc Ash you need a spacer approx 2mm under the bottom race. If you use the seal that now comes with the kit these days you may need a slightly thinner washer.

Personally I think tapers are much better than the old ball bearing solution, they stiffen up the front due to the bigger contact area of the rollers versus the ball bearing. They also last far longer and require less maintenance.

The issue with the top race protruding isn’t really an issue imo, the top race fits inside it and the profile when it’s assembled isn’t that much different than ball bearings. The top locking nut is also dished so it should protect it from crud etc from getting in.

Most headstock bearings these days are tapered, if they weren’t better Honda wouldn’t fit them, which is something to consider.

Wouldn’t that contravene the law on discrimination against the elderly?

In my experience the cause of most problems on the 500 clutch setup is the cable routing. It must follow the diagram in the PDI instructions. Does yours do so?

Have you checked the operation of the mushroom in the clutch basket as well? Just to ensure it’s moving freely.

Anorak's Corner / Re: tappet cover o ring size

I did float the idea of having some specially made in Viton but I was warned that the hardness of them could mean they wouldn’t crush properly. Personally I didn’t believe that but I thought I’d repeat it just in case.

I may have some made the correct size if my claim pays out enough. Won’t be any time soon though.

Or the push rod is broken. It should be one long rod not in 2 or more pieces.

30.8 x 3.2 is the correct size. However they ain’t available off the shelf, special order of 500 minimum is the general rule. Most sellers tell you they are the correct size but they’ll be 31x 3.0 normally. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Tappet covers are generally ok but the same ring is used in the 500/550 inlet ports and it’s very important they seal well.

There are 12 of them in a genuine top end gasket set so I use those just for the inlet ports and use close enough for the tappet covers.

I’m betting the chinese covers are using close enough as well.

Nige, putting on a brand new system can be troublesome,  try fitting it without the exhaust gaskets in the exhaust ports. As they’ll be new they’ll be thick and hold off the pipe somewhat. Fit number 2 pipe first, keep everything loose so you can move the pipe around if needed. Then fit number 1.

Once you get things lined up you can remove one pipe at a time and fit the gaskets .

Never restaked one and never had one come loose. They are designed so that they tighten up with wheel rotation, hence why they are reverse threaded. A drop of thread lock is all that’s required.

I would strongly suggest that you grease the sliding surfaces on the hub and cush drive or it will be junk in a few years. MolyD works well there.

Glad to help John.

I presume they were what you were after?

Managed to get into the garage tonight. I’m completely wrecked at the moment, gasping like a beached fish. However I did find the bag I’d put them in and spotted 2 of them straight away. I’ll post them as soon as I can. Enjoy.

Sorry Murf, thought you were replacing a 550 one.

Sorry Murf but why would you ruin a perfectly good metric thread to install an imperial one. Plus they are straight cut threads not tapered. A M6 x 1.00 45 degree angled nipple is dirt cheap, so why not just buy one and save all the hassle of trying to alter the threads. If you ruin it you risk having to buy another swinging arm and if it’s not tight on the threads the grease will just pour out of there instead of going where it should.
