Air box fitting

I can’t believe how difficult it is to fit the air box on the Cb400 f.
First I fitted the carbs and then tried to fit the air box and trying to get the air box rubber joints to fit is externally difficult , the outside ones go on but the two middle ones cylinder 2 and 3 always push back as they come into contact with the carb spigots.

So there must be a trick / tool to make the fitting easier, I have heated the rubber boots and also put a little silicon grease on the outside of the carb spigots and I have managed to fit the air box but the middle two are not fully home.

I am thinking of make a tool to support the back of the air box while I push the air box home, any advice will be very welcome.

Get the outside two on, then a piece of wood to push through from the air filter box for the middle two.

Ok thanks , I think it’s being more difficult because I am using the original rubber boots I am sure if they were new they would fit a little easier.

Use a hair dryer on the rubbers first to soften them up a bit before you put the air box on and use the piece of wood method as well as described above. Works every time👍.

Hi Guys airbox fitted now with wood and hair dryer method many thanks for the advice, just started the engine for the first time since total engine rebuild and tuned the carbs and adjusted the points with a strobe sounds great as I still have the original exhaust sand had a good day today.

Hopefully will get it back on the road in the next few weeks just need to sort out the seat and a few bits and bobs but all looking good .
