750F1 gear change issue

Hi all, after a few years standing on the side stand my 750 wont change gear to 2 and up? was working fine when it was parked up... Just wondering if the standing on the side stand has made a couple of gears `stick` together and wont allow change? it does into 1st and neutral. any ideas welcome thank you

I left my 750F1 on the centre stand for ten years and had no problems, but as Ted has said the clutch was a bit sticky.

Just cleaned the carbs and got it running (clutch works) but does not like to go up in the gears, does move a bit now its got warm but hard to move... unfortunatly I could not put on centre stand as it wont fit with the Carpy`s exhaust.

You wont get them to go up gears, oʻr down, easily unless both gearbox shafts are rotating

Thanks Brian, I think its best to check the clutch as already suggested... it does go into 1st with a clunk, but it always did that, I will strip the clutch tomorrow and check.

Mines does that occasionally from cold start off, I just momentarily release foot pressure from the gear lever then try again and it usually engages fine.

As Bryan suggests get both shafts turning.
I would raise the rear wheel off the ground and spin it, whilst trying to change through all the gears by hand, before hauling the clutch to bits.

If you haven't got one, beg, borrow or steal a rear paddock stand. Then you can turn the rear wheel while changing gear. Try it by hand, not engine running unless you're very brave.

Thanks again for your input, no paddock stand available, and I think it best to check the clutch... If I eventualy get it into gear, then its hard to get out, so I think this is a clutch issue even though its not `dragging` or `pulling when in gear with the clutch pulled in.

It's near impossible for me to get mine into neutral when I pull up at the lights, I have to cut the engine select neutral and restart the engine.
This is nothing new, I have had the bike since new April 1976 and it has always been the same.

Hopefully somebody on this forum will remember the known cure for your problem, I think it's something to do with oil not escaping properly from the clutch basket and maybe causing clutch drag?

I'm able to select neutral ok on my F1, but was horrified when I inspected the clutch and discovered the PO had cut small grooves on the faces of the steel clutch plates with probably a file or hacksaw blade.

But the clutch had been working fine so I just bit my lip and reassembled it and have now done over 30k without a problem.

Thanks for that, I do seem to remember something along those lines, as to your bodgy job, if it works then it was not a bodge.
Nowadays I must admit that the thought of ripping the clutch apart does not thrill me.
The olden days when I would wrestle a 750 engine out of the frame on the drive by myself and rip it to bits are long gone so I will leave it as it is as it still drives and rides nicely.

Thank you again, started on the clutch strip but the special nut is causing me a problem, I made a tool from an old socket which is fine and fits well, but when I try to undo the nut, the whole lot turns, is there anyway to lock the clutch to undo the special nut please??

That shaft should be "drive" to rear wheel, so put in gear and hold rear brake tight.

Also an impact wrench is handy for jobs like this, but if you don't have one try a sharp blow with a hammer on your socket bar.
