Anything manufactured before 1st January 1973 can have black and white number.  Please don't use one on the front.  They were outlawed because they caused horrific injuries.

nah!, was on my 535 viagra parked near gate, on the rough track that goes to the rear, couple of bike's up from a velo and across from a manx goldstar. oh thanx for the info on reg plates, the plates looked silver on black.

Almost right: it's bikes road registered in UK before 1st Jan 1973 can still legally use silver on black.  It doesn't matter when they were made.

I agree about the front plates though: not a good idea on the road!

The official testers book sez:-

Motor bicycles manufactured before 1 January 1973 may have registration plates displaying white, grey or silver characters on a black background

The funny thing is that yellow/white number plates were introduced a lot earlier than 1973 and almost all early seventies bikes would have had a yellow number plate originally because back then people thought the black and white number plate looked old fashioned.  My Land Rover is 1969 (G reg) and still has its original yellow number plate on the back.  I could change it but I can't be bothered and don't want to spend money for no particular gain.  My CB350 (K reg) had a yellow number plate which fell off somewhere on the way back from the bike show at the NEC in 1985 so I replaced it with a black one because it was cheap to make but still legal.

So, for the purists out there, yellow rear and the front number plate removed or put under the clocks left to right, which I remember my father having on his bike for a while.

Hello mick, no 400/4 it's still on a sorn so I took one of my SOHC comuters out for a run I'll see you up at the merry go round for a brew over the summer for sure...counting down for the TT now.

Will do mick, I'm taking my chicken chaser over seen a few of them last year running around, I'ts pointless having anything that will break the speed limit so many police with camera's.
