The 'easy fixer-upper' still sits in our boys shed, right next to the bucket of rocking horse shat and the crate of humble pie. Anyway, we are into the motor at last and I've learned lots of new words, like helicoil, left hand twist, prograbit and die die die. I have a question, what does this do?

Cos' there were none inside when I finally got the cylinder head cover off. Haynes and Clymer are no bloody help. I've got the replacements but before I bung em in I thought I should canvas the Grey council in case leaving them out is akin to some kind of warp drive fettle that only the sages know about.

I'm new to these engines but like a challenge - see attached pic from workshop manual. Do these cover the head nuts?

If you look at this head and see the six large holes [four either side of the camchain slot and two further out] the seals go
on the camcover where they seal these holes.

You frequently find the old ones stuck to the camcover mate

Always called them Pontefract cakes myself, although the yanks seem to prefer "pucks".

Don't try to eat them though as unlike pontefract cakes they don't taste all that nice.

They last longer, though.

Glad someo11ne else calls em Pontefract cakes as well
