Are new ones available yet? Mine rotted through from the back and whilst the chrome stayed reasonable it got to be foil thin, I now have one that has had new metal welded into the 4 inches above the brace and another that needs it, decent ones are getting rarer, but that is still more than I am used to paying for a whole complete bike! I think most are a bit steep at £65.00

it saddens me.  one of the things I used really to like about these bikes was that they were always very practical classics; it was easy to find parts and they were cheap to buy run and repair.

I'm currently bidding on a damaged 550 mudguard on ebay.  Even though it's dented it's loads better than the one I have and, hopefully, the purists will be put off.

Why the F--k do people say marks that will easily polish out, chrome is not like alley where you can get it back to good metal, once chrome is scratched, damaged or marked that is it, you can make it look slightly better but not polish it out

Outbid, right, I give up, I'm going to either get an aluminium mudguard or patch this one up with filler and stainless steel strips like I did with my 350.

On my 550 I just cut out the worst 4 inches and shaped then gas welded in a repair section, once dressed in very carefully with a fine flap disk it was not very noticeable unless you were looking for it, appart from the fact the thing had to be painted rather than chrome. On the rear guard I have been lucky enough to scrounge up fiberglass replica muddies that are the right shape, but either black or coulor matched to the tank. Makes rot a thing of the past in that area.

Don't give up yet Florence. I have a mudguard but with no mounting bracket or stays. For some reason the cable holder is on the wrong side. It came off my 400/4 and is in really good condition (I only changed it because some kind soul got me a new one with the 2 stays for my B'day last year). PM me your email and I will take a pic tomorrow if your interested

Thank you Nurse Julie, that looks fab but it's too small.  My bike is 500/4.  (Oh dear, feel bad you had to go to the depths of the workshop)

Many thanks anyway.  I will keep looking, one will turn up at some point.  I was only outbid £26 against my high bid of £25.  I'll have to adjust my mental compass and increase my budget.  I am slowly getting round to the idea that things are no longer priced like they were in the 1980s  :)  I've started to realise that it isn't possible any more to buy 70's Honda basket cases for £150  >:(   I've even started keeping my bike indoors which for me is very weird and inconvenient.

Matthew, modification sounds good.  On my 350 I attached strips of stainless steel which I bolted to the good bits so that the stays no longer fell off.  seems to have lasted quite well.

No Problem at all Florence. Like you say, it would be a bit shorter than the 500/4 one but, I lined it up to a CB500/4 we have and it will fit on the back stays.
