Julie, I thought the 400 had an 18" front wheel whereas the 500/550 had a 19".
Wonder what the mudguard/tyre clearance would be if you put that guard on a 500/550.

You are 100% correct Chris. When I lined it up with where the fittings are on the 500/4, it reduced the clearance from the tyre by about 1/2 in or so, therefore plenty of clearance left. It is also quite a bit shorter than a 500/4 and I think it would look really nice, sort of short and stubby. The thing is, even though I took this off my 400/4, I'm not really sure that it's for a 400/4 anyway. In the past someone had gone to the expense of having it re chromed, a very nice job done and it's still in lovely condition and as I said earlier, the cable guide was on the wrong side.
