Another clutch ?
« on: June 05, 2016, 07:46:32 AM »
Are the friction plates the Sam for K0/1/2/3 etc

I read somewhere Honda did some clutch mods at some point to overcome clutch slippage issues
If you think there's light at the end of the tunnel it's usually another train !!

The clutch on the 500K0 had a clutch ring like the second generation 750K0 clutch..The 500K0 changed after number 1018727 to a up graded clutch on all the plates.

There was a none honda mod using different plates hand written in on old US parts book saying use 450 plates and late cb77 springs but no part numbers are given. I do know that the originals had slanted grooves on the friction plate and you have to fit them the correct way round

If you are curious about the clutch modifications you may consult the various CB500 parts list here: http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb500 but I doubt the pictures are Always accurate as far as the grooves.
I believe the clutch plates with slanted grooves were not much of a success.

I fitted 450 clutch plates to my 500/4 some years ago as I was told that it would reduce pressure at the lever, which it did. They were bought from DS and have proven to be very satisfactory.

I've tried all kinds of things to improve mine (new cable, cleaned and re-greased the lifter mechanism, CB450 clutch plates) and it's still like an on/off switch.  The only way to pull away smoothly is by giving it more revs and slipping the clutch.  It's definitely worse than my original 500 (back in 1979) but I can't figure out why.

Might try the 450 plates. Is there a particular model year/part number I need?

This is all I have on it Paul (same as Bryan mentioned). CB77 finished in 1968 so there is a clue to the springs. Will check 450 plates tonight.

I  guess a Doctor must have done those scriblings  ;D ;D ;D

My sidecar bike had a slippy clutch and came with a new boxed set of hd clutch plates, I changed the oil, gave it a service, and kept riding, several oil changes later when I finally had time to sort the clutch it ran ok and the slip had gone ( those hd clutch plates are still in their box in my loft). It kept soldiering on for couple of 100,000 miles with no more than oil changes before 1st and 2nd gear started jumping out up hills. One thing I found was it was fussy about the brand of oil, Silkolene 10/40 and Morris 10/40 fleet oil seemed best, comma 10/40 was not to its liking at all, all semi synthetic.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
