comstar wheel rim tape??
« on: August 02, 2016, 01:38:27 PM »
do comstar wheels need a rim tape or band fitted......I have just removed the old tyre from my 1979 750 f2 ready to fit a new one and didn't find any rim tape there........should there be ?.....am I wrong in thinking that  they are just for spoked wheels and are not required.

                        cheers Terry

I think the rim tape is only there to prevent spokes puncturing the inner tube, in your case its not needed

Stev

You don't even need a tube with many ComStar wheels. Should be able to run tubeless with tyres like Avon Road riders. My 1978 F2 is tubeless.

The tyre fitters usually have a selection of them.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Check the writing on the rim as if it does not state tubeless it is not suitable

just checked the rim for numbers,....the numbers are   D.I,D  JAPAN  2.15 X 18    and    J18X2.15  117 DOT   at another location.

  so it's tube only then.

   thanks again for the information,..Terry

Some Comstars wont take the tubeless valve so will need to run tubed. You wont need the rim tape whatever as you dont have spokes. If your unsure about the rim just fit a tube.

Having jogged the memory it's fairly easy to tell:-

If the valve on the tube is a non sloppy fit in the hole it's a tubed rim

If the valve has a lot of play it's a tubeless and needs a special nut to hold the tube

using that information you have just given Bryanj I have just measured the hole size and valve size and they are as follows.... 8.3 mm hole and 7.5mm valve,
