Exhaust Repair
« on: August 03, 2016, 06:44:15 PM »
Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a place that may do exhaust repairs?

My newly acquired CL350 has some holes. It was listed as 'original and solid' condition. They were half right ;-)

That's not encouraging.   The bits that aren't holey are probably wafer thin so welding looks a non starter.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

You could get them brazed, much greater chance of success without blowing more holes in them. Gallops in Eastbourne would be worth asking, they do allsorts of welding /brazing/ sheet metalworking (they used to be in Hastings when I worked for them 30 years ago, but the building was demolished to build the Sealife Centre!)

Cheers hairy.

Thankfully DK are footing the bill because they sold the bike stating original and solid exhausts. When I started the thing up it sounded amazing, but I soon realised why!! Ha ha

If that is original and solid I wonder what the bad ones looked like.

If D.K. are footing the bill, it would be cheaper for them to find you half decent replacements!

I have found DK really good on after sales quibbles. They are the best people to sort you out with a decent replacement. This is why the Ashimoto motto on  Honda restos is ... Source some NOS exhausts or really nice replicas (eg Yamiya HM300's) Then buy the bike !

DK are on the look out for decent replacements but far and few between at the moment.

I did listen to your advice Ash and looked for a bike with a decent exhaust system. I even spoke to DK before bidding and asked several questions about the exhaust system, and was told it was in good condition!

I think those CL exhausts are rocking horse poo Al as the bike was never sold here and they command a massive price NOS in the USA. At least with the CB version, Brituro do repros's which they made me a pair of to order with the correct seams, no logos etc. I will keep my eyes peeled for you. Which CL is it?  ie K what ? My guess from the side panel emblems/year of manufacture  is its a K2

Spot on. 1970 K2. Cheers Ash.

I have seen some aftermarket pipes but that's not a route I really want to go down. Hopefully something will crop up and DK will come through for me.

Usually the mild steel inside rusts away leaving just the chrome to blow through. If you try to weld them, there is no real material to work to and any heat takes away what's left..

Brazing,  you'd normally have to get a mild steel repair patch inside the pipe fixed to the structure then you're able to fill the surface holes with brass rods to leave the outside appearance a somewhat normal shape for refinishing, a bit like using car body filler to restructure the surface. Can be done but quite fiddly and time consuming.

I was looking at these:

http://www.chromerestorationspecialist.co.uk/services/dechroming--repair/

Not used them, don't know what the prices are like, but if you've got no choice it may be worth a call.

Cheers Deano.

Since my post I've managed to find someone locally. Going to repair the internals and patch/plate the outsides to make them useable and MOT passable. The chrome that you can immediately see is in a good condition apparently, so all the work will be under the heat shields, round the back, underneath, etc.
