AIR BOX TO CARB RUBBERS CB550 - not sure which ones to use.
« on: August 23, 2016, 05:30:17 PM »
Hi Chaps

Just putting together the air box for my CB550 K3 which is now an F, but I have a query. I have two sets of air box to carb rubbers here and they are both different. I'm not sure which set to use. I'm using Keihin 069A carbs, I'm wondering if there are different size rubbers between PD carbs and the 069A's and I'm wondering which ones to use?. They are similar but, not quite the same, or does it matter as long as they fit tight at both the air box end and carb end, any ideas anyone?.

Ta in advance
Julie xxx

The air box chamber from the F and K are identical in size and shape Ken (I have both here) but, the holes are 1mm bigger on one of them. The air filter housings are identical shape / size but one has a rubber pad on it, this one says CB550F-F the one without the rubber pad just says CB550F.The problem I have is I haven't got any PD K3 carbs to compare with.

Another option is, has anyone got a set of PD's they could measure the OD of the inlets for me and then I can measure the rubbers and try and work it out from there. Process of elimination me thinks  ??? ??? ???.

the k3 rubbers are longer than the earlier type, perhaps the pd carbs are shorter front to back so need a longer rubber to reach. If yours reach then they are correct!
Love the 500 and 550 have a 500 called Lazarus under restoration

If you have the K3 ones they are rocking horse poo, especially the one that is different. DS sells pattern 500 ones

That's interesting Bryan. Do you mean the angled ones that go on the ends?

I remember having read in reviews/tests back then the CB550K3 had longer rubbers to create more of a tourer bike (compared to the somewhat sportier F models). K3 carbs were set leaner too.

I seem to remember that on the K3 one rubber was a different angle to the rest But it might have been both outers

Have both the F and K.
The inlet o/d on the Pd carb on the K is about 1mm smaller dia. (39mm on F and 38mm on K) (not great accuracy as measure using a £10 caliper from Lidl!)
On the K the rubbers to the inlet manifold are shorter and hence the rubbers from the carb to air box are longer.

Thanks for all the info and measurements chaps. The problem I have now is that the smallest ID is the shortest of the 2 types I have here, by about 2mm, which just isn't making sense. I know the easiest option would be to put carb rubbers on the carbs and use whatever fits in between the carbs and air box. The problem I have is that my engine, although just completely reconditioned, is still on the bench, the carbs, once again, just been refurbed are on the shelf and the frame has had it's tail end cut off and a hoop fitted but not welded in place yet and then it all needs powder coating. So, nowhere near building the bike yet. I'm trying to help out another forum member with carb rubbers etc but, I don't want to give the wrong ones away  ::) ::) ::)
