I bought a H4 53/4 inch light unit,

depending on your generator power you can fit a 35w/35w  or 55w/60w  or I think a 100w H4 bulb,

my light has a pilot bulb as well,

 I think about £15 from a local motor factors,bulb about £4
That's a good price John. I'm assuming it wasn't for your 500/4 as 5 3/4 would be a bit small  :o :o, (I only know this as I have just measured a 500/4 we have here and it's 7"). My headlamp also has the pilot light and I have 35w/35w fitted, which gives less than 1 candle power I reckon, on main beam !!!

If you're using an H4 bulb. You don't need to go 100watt to get a brighter beam. Both Ring, Lucas, Osram & a few others do 55/60watt H4 that give a much brighter light. from 50% up to 120%. Don't go to Halfords as they are too bloody dear. A local Motor Factor should be able to help.

I've increased mine to 55/60W.  The only downside is, with the headlamp on, braking to turn a corner, indicating for the corner as well, blows the 15A main fuse causing the engine to die.  It happened twice.  Increased fuse to 20A, now OK.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

I reckon a 5 3/4" light unit would fall through the Honda rim.
The aftermarket Cibie units measure 5 3/4" across the lens and have an adaptor ring that fits inside the standard rim to reduce the hole diameter.

For H4 bulbs you could try these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351595613785?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
They are supposed to consume 20% less power, which to my mind defies the laws of physics, but seem to be well reviewed.
This link originally came from an earlier thread on here, their price is very good.

Going back to  the original subject - re rusting reflector - what about re-silvering, my chromer gave me a contact to get it done, I got it parted from the glass ok but haven't had it done yet.
Anyone tried it ?

Have you got, or could you get, an idea of cost from your contact?
It's a process that inherently doesn't feel as if it would be cheap, but I have no idea how many pennies you would be looking at.

I had a 1970s Ducati headlamp bowl re silvered recently....it was an unobtainable item and I had no real choice; it came it at about £120 by the time it was back on the bike...far from cheap but it did the job.

Mick.

Excuse my language but f**k, that's expensive. Ok if no other options but luckily there is with a CB400/4
