My way of thinking John (womens logic !!! ::) ::)) is that if it's not required to be taxed, it's not required to be SORN'd either. I was going to SORN it anyway but thought I would just try and find out the logic behind it.

Ah yes, the robots, that'll be it. I will SORN it anyway as no intention of riding it for the foreseeable. It's just one of those things that I would like to know the reasoning behind.....but, it is DVLA so probably no reasoning at all   ??? ??? ???

You don't need to SORN it as such but when the free tax expires it must either be -
  • Retaxed (for free),  meaning it must be insured and MOT'd or
    SORNed

A whopping big fine if you avoid taxing it for free.

Hope this helps.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Yes Mike, it does. So even though the tax is FOC, in effect it is still classed as taxed. So it is the same as any vehicle then, either taxed or SORN. Makes sense I suppose.

You still have to tax it in the normal way it's just free. So if you don't have mot and insurance you can't tax it. So under those circumstances it must be sorned. If it is insured and mot you may as well renew the tax. Daft system.

It's not just the DVLA which we struggle to understand - as they really do seem to defy common sense (or wimmens logic) - it's ALL Government Departments !

I expect that everyone on this Forum could have their own RANT about one Government Department or another, but the worrying common denominator is that the RANT would consistently (if not almost exclusively) be directed at one Government Department or another, which simply shows that they are NOT doing the job we are paying them to do.

Recently I have taken to using this Website  -  https://www.writetothem.com  - to 'air' my particular views to Local Councillors, County Councillors, MEP's and my MP.

The beauty of it is that once you have scribbled your 'comments' you can then send it on to whichever 'target' you want to aim it at.......you just have to remember to cut and paste it and maybe make a few minor changes so it remains focussed on your new 'target'.

TBH, since I started using this method, I have had a spectacularly good success rate of responses from most of those who I have written to, with some really useful dialogue along the way,  which has made my original effort well worthwhile.

The other good thing is that the Website monitors if and how the Respondant replies, and statistically reports on their 'success rate' - which can be crucial come Re-election day.....and they know it !

If more people bent the ears of their Elected Representatives using this Website, they might get the message a bit louder and clearer.......after all, the dismal number of only about 40% turning out to vote probably makes Councillors and MP's think that the UK public really don't give a monkeys......but this can show them that we actually do.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the issue with this SORN business.
Any motor vehicle registered with DVLA must be either taxed (if it is used on the road) or SORNed (if it is not).
The phrase that historic vehicles are 'exempt' from road tax is a misnomer; they are not exempt, just taxed at zero rate.
So the choice doesn't seem that difficult really - if you have insurance and MOT for a vehicle classed as historic then you may as well tax it as it will cost nothing, then you could at least legally ride it on the road if you want to. If you have a vehicle not classed as historic you wouldn't question the SORN issue; there is no difference really apart from cost of road tax.
SORNing it would do the job as well; it still only lasts a year before it has to be renewed but it also costs nothing.
So take your pick. I see it as just one of the 'overheads' of owning a motor vehicle.

Not quite correct there, from April 2014 if you sorn a vehicle it now lasts until you tax the vehicle again. I found this out when I phoned them to query why I hadn't had a tax or sorn reminder after 13 months. Apparently it saves them a lot of time and money not having to send out reminders!
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

I really don't mind either way. If I was going to ride it, obviously I would tax it but, I have no intention of riding it at present, therefore I will SORN it. I asked the question because it is the first historic class bike I have personally owned and wanted to know and understand the logic behind it. And yes SORN is now continuous until taxed.
