Circlip and piston removal ...master cylinder front brake
« on: January 15, 2017, 05:35:33 PM »
Hi....I've dug down to my circlip...or what's left of it.
Any tips for getting it out. It won't budge if I try to prize it...the holes and lugs are buggered,

Cheers

I once used a small screwdriver,  sharpened it up one side, like a chisel.   It weren't easy though.   If only they were made of stainless we wouldn't have all this bother.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

I did one last week. But it wasn't absolutely awful. But I found it useful to put a bolt back through the the lever pivot point and then use a small screwdriver to lever the piston to the bottom and keep it there. Gives easier access. If the piston is stuck you can try soaking it from both ends and give it a tap.

My Pistons were completely bug***** couldnt shift the clips and the gudgeon pins were also solid.

Ended up putting them on the milling machine and milled down enough to get the pins and clips free.

Destroyed the pistons and pins but at least saved the rods as I replaced the piston, pins and clips anyway

Brutal but effective

Paul that's a big master cylinder  ;D
The 750 might pull up if they were that big.

Tom I had snap ring pliers like those and had to file them down to reach the clip.I gave up and just prize them out with a small screwdriver and pick now

A bit defeatist but is it worth shifting?
The last knackered one I got out just revealed a very corroded bore.

Yes, always better to save the conrod, which is why he did it!

Oops sorry misread the post - piston as a master cylinder piston . Now that would boost stopping power🙈🙈🙈

I found it impossible to get the circlip out even with one of the lugs and it's hole hole intact but took it to my local fixer and he managed to get a very thin sharpened piece of metal in to the hole and slowly prize it out. It must be impossible if both the lugs are broken.

Not impossible.   It's like nailing jelly to the ceiling though.  It took me well over an hour.  The trick is to make the aforementioned sharpened chisel - like screwdrivers dig in to the metal,  prising the circlip out as far as you can, keeping it there while you dig the second one in.  Once the clip is free of the groove,  it's relatively simple.
No, I'm not volunteering to go through that again.
