500K Transmission Bearings
« on: January 31, 2017, 11:11:44 AM »
Just about to start stripping the 500K1 down to replace a seriously flapping primary chain. Obviously cam chain at the same time.
Bike runs ok and oil pressure good, so not planning to change main or crank bearings unless I find anything.
But there is a bit of whine from somewhere when I pull away.
Should any particular bearings be replaced as a matter of course while I'm in there?
Thanks for any help, Phil

The only bearing i have ever seen give trouble is the needle roller and these are very difficult to get now

Hi all,

Sorry to butt in Seabe but I have a similar question. I left one of the bearings in the crankcase (http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb500k1-four-general-export_model14659/partslist/E15.html#results part#24) when I put it through the dishwasher so it picked up some surface rust and now it feels a bit grainy. I bought an open 6205 c3 NTN but now I'm thinking if there wasn't a better brand or type. Also is there a proper installation procedure or is it fairly straight forward?

Cheers

NTN was one of Hondas original suppliers

True it even says that on the old bearing (except now it's made in taiwan). It's just that apparently for some people NTN stands for never trust nippon, but I guess they're good enough for the transmission on a CB.

Sorry if it was a stupid question.

Thanks for info on the bearings Bryan.
The US site seems at odds with some recommending replacing bearings here and there that may do more harm than good.
I've got two used spare needle rollers for my bikes that I'm keeping just in case.

I fail to see how replacing a bearing for a new one can do harm?

Typical yanks.

Did have a USA 500 in with no half rings, no grooved bearings not long ago.

Some people are pretty ham fisted. + important to replace with bearings of at least as good quality.
