Apple TV any good
« on: March 07, 2017, 07:35:33 PM »
Yes I know it's not bike related bug I don't know anyone who has an Apple TV box and wondering what's it like compared to Amazon Fire TV.

We have sky in our main room, Amazon tv in the family room but now our son has his own TV we are considering buying a new box for the family room and move fire tv to our sons room. Just wondering how Apple compares to fire TV boxes. We watch a lot of Netflix and Amazon prime, especially for the grand tour and Vikings etc. Can you download Amazon app to Apple TV also, if we want with that?.

Thanks

1) Amazon is a river in south America or a Bid building on junction 12 of the M1
2) Sky is that thing you look up to while laying on the beach.
3) Netflix sounds a bit like fishnet porn.
But, what would I know ! Have not seen or watched a TV in 30 years  ;)

Fine
If its got anything to do with Apple it will only be compatible with other Apple products.
Don't they all just show the same things anyway?

Yep".......... I like the answers so far and yes they do the same, but Apple TV is about £140 and Amazon is £80, just wanted to know if Apple was worth the extra and what over the Amazon box. Yes I would rather spend it on my bike, but needs must and have to get something for my son to watch apart from DVDs

Chromecast is £28, displays content from most but not all relevant tablet/mobile apps on the TV, note Sky Go doesn't work with it.
Kodi is a free app that can be used to watch most TV/Film, but note that many of plug ins to streaming services are not legal. You can buy pre-configured kodi boxes or run it from a tablet/mobile. Apple TV is often used in a similar way.

We use a chromecast to steam off a tablet, seems a bit glitchy but the tablet is old and the internet is chronically slow so not a fair test, seems far more reliable at my brother in laws where the internet is a bit more advanced than our dial up speck broadband.
Anyhow, providing your internet is any good, chromcast or firestick are cheap alternatives compared to the tv setop boxes. The chromecast is very clever and keeps working when the tablet that set something running powers off or leaves the room - I think it automatically switches to whatever mobiles or other android devices are around plus range is good - it runs in the backgound too so the kids can stream something on tv and I can still be surfing ebay. I think the firestick works in a similar way but is more sympathetic to slow internet.  The chromecast is tiny, uses 1 hdmi port, I plan to get a Firestick for the kids ( works with an amazon fire for kids which has masses of extra games and cartoons they like and is the only subscription we pay @ £5/ month after 2 years) plus for Grand tour.
Appart from that we use Freesat, there is very little on tv worth watching these days anyway. Only sky things I miss at all are discovery and movies, but for the number of movies they showed worth seeing even once I could buy the dvds and still have enough money to buy the dvd boxsets of anything good off discovery and still save over a sky subscription. I do not miss Sky at all in other words. Just remember their installers are overpriced and the quality of the work sucks next time their equipment fails.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

Mat, great info. Will go for fire stick since he would get the most from that. Yeah discovery channel is the best, if they do throw in the towel with sky, I will defo cancel our subscription with them. Thanks
