Problem with me points
« on: March 25, 2007, 12:32:33 PM »
Hello,
After having a problem with the timing of my CB750F2/F1 (f2 frame with a F1 engine) i have replaced the old ignition points, condensers and back plate assembly with a new set from David Silver Spares. The old set was in need of new points and the threads had been chewed on some of the fittings.

Now then, i now have a blue spark on the points for 1 & 4 cylinders, i believe this is called arcing, and can't get me timing light to operate properly. I have already set the static timing with a bulb across the points. Points 2 & 3 are fine. What is causing this? Would it be the condenser?

Your help would be very much appreciated, especially as i need to use the old girl for getting to work.

Cheers,
FatFreddy

Arcing points is usually caused by a knackered condenser. They are there specifically to stop this but die eventually due to corrosion and vibration.

Buy and fit a new one.

Cheers Steve.
Thanks for the info. I'll have a look at the condenser first and make sure it's connected properly, because it's brand spanking new. If it is cream crackered i'll try the old ones before buying another new one.

Would you know if these condensers are easy to brake during installation, ie if an accidental short is caused across the circuit?

New ones shouldn't be easy to break on installation - but if it is NOS and has been sitting around for 30-odd years it could be no good.

Where did you buy it?

Bought it from David Silver Spares. Who are usually very reliable and helpful.

I've removed the guilty condenser, and replaced it with one from the old set. And all is ticketybo. The offending part is in the bin and i'm off to take the bike for a quick blast round the block to make sure all is OK.

And later on i will give some serious thought to getting in touch with Messrs Boyer and Bransden.

Once again, thank you very much Steve for your help.

Shipping is by sea so not much use if you are in a hurry!  It is however, cheaper than a used set on eBay!
