Silver numberplate advice
« on: May 17, 2017, 03:08:16 PM »
I was under the impression a bike had to be registered before Jan 1st 1977 to be able to use a silver and black numberplate, but I've seen bikes on here and other forums which are way younger than 1977 rocking one, are they just chancing it?

im asking due to the bike I just bought being registered in June 1977 and I really want one!!

As far as I'm aware, the non reflective plate (black and silver) date rolls with the historic vehicle class - so your vehicle has to be 40 years old but it doesn't apply until April of that year. So your June reg bike won't legally qualify until April of 2018 - yes, the others are chancing it and changing plates for MOT.

Yes the historic vehicle class rolls on though the link shows an out of date doc., 1973 for non historic (bottom of page 10 and top of page 11)

Be careful how you interpret that document! Reading between the lines, 1973 IS the firm cut off point for black and silver/white number plates, vehicles registered as "Historic" tax class, may use the older style of plates (letter sizes/spacing) BUT NOT black and silver/white, that is strictly pre 1973. You can argue all you want about it with a determined copper, but ignorance is no defence in English law, you will then end up with £100 fine/ticket. Some M.O.T. testers will let it through, as many younger ones aren't aware of the law (same as those that pass bikes with pulsing rear brake pedals!)
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

Your bike would probably  never of had a black and silver plate...
Everyone wanted the new looking yellow plates so there bike looked new...a black and silver one would of aged a new looking  honda straight out the box...
All my 70's hondas that have had there old original plates still intact have had yellow ones...especially if they are the original dealer plates

There has been an amendment this month and black and silver plates can be put on a bike if it is declared manufactured before 1st January 1977, it is now on a rolling forward scheme like road tax.

Have you got a link to that amendment ? I can't seem to find it anywhere. I have quite a few bikes that it will be relevant to so it will be good to see. Not that I'm in to black / silver plates on the later bikes, I think they look really silly.
I think anything on an L reg and prior looks good black and white, M reg, debateable but N reg onwards just looks totally out of character with the age of bike.

I agree with Nursie about not looking right after L reg.   I think it's because we're not used to seeing M reg and later with a black plate, although our perceptions may change as we see more of them.   Who knows?
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Bottom paragraph on the left, although it doesn't mention it's rolling. It wouldn't do; that date would change every year.
