Yes the historic vehicle class rolls on though the link shows an out of date doc., 1973 for non historic (bottom of page 10 and top of page 11)

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/533255/inf104-vehicle-registration-numbers-and-number-plates.pdf

It says about the rolling date for "Historic Vehicles" in the Government document I linked....

Since April 2016 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1976 can display the older style plates. You must:
* have applied to DVLA, and
* be registered within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class

I concur about people wanting their shiny new vehicle not to look old fashioned.  My Land Rover was first registered in 1969 and still has its original 'G' registration plate in yellow, white on the front.

My 1974 CB500 can now have a black plate but I can't be bothered and it looks wrong.  My 1972 CB350 has a black plate which I made myself in the 80s - no longer legal.  When it goes for the MOT in a few weeks I think I will go for black plate but then the whole bike is very ratty and looks much older than it is really.

If you want to be authentic in every detail, none of the bikes on this forum should have black plates and personally, whatever age a bike is, I would not have a front number plate.

For authenticity look at your old pics.
My new SS125 Aug 70 J plate... Black and silver with blade type front.
My new T100C Triumph Aug 72 L plate...Yellow plate with front flat over the headlamp.
My new CB500 Aug 74 N plate...Yellow plate with blade type front.
Have a few other examples, but the fact is as soon as the yellow plates became legal dealers fitted them as standard and nearly everyone wanted them.
Not sure of the legal position on front plates, but I would never fit one for a road bike.

I have bikes with white on black I made myself, why is this no longer legal?

Nowadays you have to prove who you are and that you are the registered keeper to have a plate made:

In theory, yes you do but in practice that is not the case. We get all our plates from Jap Graphics and they never ask for any documentation. Most suppliers when ordering on line never ask for anything.

It's only new plates that need ID etc, if its been on there for years (wink, wink) it does not need a suppliers ID etc

Only pre 72 would not need plate makers mark, any black and silver after that would from a legal standpoint.

True, any black plates retro fitted as part of the post '72 rolling rule would have to comply to current rules regarding manufacturers identifications. So vehicles from '72 to '77 using black plates would have to have manufacturers identification as owners can't claim they were fitted originally.

What's to stop folk making their own plate and putting their post code on the bottom?
