Setting points using dwell meter
« on: April 02, 2007, 09:59:19 PM »
Hi, can anyone help with this please

Once I have set my points up using static method, then I check with strobe light, bike rpm1100 with F lined up bike sounds a little restricted somehow, then I check with dwell and the meter reads 51 and 53.
Then I set left points using meter to 45 and then same on right set, both 45.
Then check with strobe light and need to adjust.
Run out of adjustment, don't know what to do. Is it better to have both sets of points dwell matching and slightly larger say 48 for each set.
Have typed dwell into search but not had any luck.
Need the bike for weekend easter egg run

Cheers for any help

How does the bike \"feel\" with the point set that way, I don't own a strobe,  so just rely on setting the point manually and then ride it to see how it feels.

Have you checked the US site, they have a larger user base so chances are they could have your answer.

I have found it nearly impossible to time these old bikes with a strobe/dwell meter over the last 30 years!

Like John - I just set them statically, never fails!

As John says, try a search on http://www.sohc4.net/forums

Thanks  both for that, I did a search usa style, I have been trying to set points to spec dwell 45 and this is unrealistic, seems clear now. Got new honda points very cheap so made sense to change them, I will use the meter as a way of matching the gap exactly for both sets whatever I get after gapping with feeler blade. just for reference it seems 46-49 is good so I am in the ball park anyhow. It started 2nite better than ever before, much smoother just sounds so different than it did but maybe timing was a way out??
Dyna or boyer next month maybe, see how it goe's

Cheers Steve

Hi mike,
I use that method too,and find it works really well, my old Grandad, bless him, told me about that method years ago, and then I read about it in  manual somewhere, just goes to show you, you don't always need to use this new fangled kit.
