Fired up for the first time since 1993
« on: August 15, 2007, 08:05:55 PM »
Well I got the new battery yesterday, I had to go to the dentist this morning so I was going to spend an afternoon checking out everything electrical then fire her up tomorrow, however our 12 year old grandson (Dean) arrived and he got very excited about starting her up, as he helped me put the frame on the engine I went along.
Took a long time to get the oil pressure light off, I put one litre of oil in the tank and one litre in the cam cover, it took a long time for the oil light to go out, so long that I started to suspect the oil pressure switch, but a look into the cam cover showed no sign of oil spraying around so I carried on. The oil light eventually went out, then I waited a few more minutes turning her over until I could see oil spraying about in the cam cover. Plugs in and she fired up on the second push of the button. I was amazed, Dean was over the moon, he's seen the bike progress from a bare frame to the finished article.
The only real snag was the ignition switch, it gave up the ghost while we were getting the oil pressure up, rather than disappoint Dean I put a jumper wire in the cable block and carried on. I later changed out the switch for the one on my F2 which works great.
Got to fit the tacho and speedo cables, change out some bulbs, fit the new registration plate, check out the horn as it isn't working and she should be ready for the road.

Don't worry Dave, the photos hide all the dodgy bits ! Plus it's more important how they go rather than how they look.

If I have the bike and gear sorted and it's not raining you could see me there, I managed to find Elite Engineering which is around there somewhere so there is every chance. These days I tend to rely a lot on my sat nav to get places, have to fit a mount on the bars or something. Just chasing down electrical problems at the moment and am determined to fix my neutral switch, it went U/S in 1978, replaced it but it was still no good, so I taped over the light. Thought I had it cracked when I found a chaffed wire under the motor and it worked great right up to the point when I started up the bike, now it's on all the time. The other snag is a dragging clutch, had to use the back brake to free it off, it works but there is a decided clunk when I put it into first and finding neutral is near impossible, time will tell, but it's not exactly brain surgery to replace the plates.

Cheers
