If you mean the sprocket cover then yes, however if you mean the generator cover then not advised. You say crankcase cover but it's important to say which one you mean. I'm fairly sure you mean the sprocket cover but you can never be too careful.
Yeah got that Andy BUT you could be rebuilding the engine and testing the seals for leaks whilst the generator cover was off as well, if you've ever started the engine with the generator cover off you'll know why I was making sure it was just the sprocket cover.
Don't forget to tape up the shaft spline and clean the shaft or you will damage the seal lip when fitting
