CB750F2 Clutch Centre Nut Tool
« on: September 06, 2018, 04:20:04 PM »
Got to the point where the next job is to pull the clutch apart...and aside from a few bits on the gearchange side...it's the last thing before I can look to split the cases.

But...the silly centre nut is going to need a special tool. A tool more special than I am....

I have looked at the 'bodge' options of grinding up a socket, and I have done this before...when I had to swap the timing gears on a guzzi LeMans and I needed a peg spanner to undo one. But....I don;t have a socket of suitable size that I am willing to ruin for the purpose.

I am not at all sure what size socket it should be, so would rather get the right tool.

The only thing I could find on E-Bay was this one:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-Clutch-Centre-Nut-Tool-CB750F-CB900F-CB1100F-DOHC-Four-1970s-1980s-HWT002/251938675732?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Dave Silver spares are out of stock.

Is this the right tool? Is there a better option?

Also....when I rebuild, is it possible to replce the centre nut with a proper nut and tab washer? Like most bikes use.......

John, if you look at the manuals online there is a trick using a bent welding rod and a normal socket. I have a socket made to fit which the toolmaker at work made me. I could lend you it but on holiday at the moment 8) 8)

I'll give it a shot with the welding rod ( well...I will use something about the right size ) and see if I can budge it. The picture helps....as I had seen what they did in the manual, and it looked.....odd.

If not...Paul.....thanks for the offer. I may well be in touch :)

Was down at the folks place this weekend, and have got hold of some thick walled tubing with about the right internal diameter. Will have a crack at making my own tool tomorrow.

The tube was formelry a 60's Triumph fork tube....Dad has lots as most of the bikes he rebuilds seem to come with worn and scored tubes.....usually with the castle nuts siezed in place or butchered, so they need replacing. They get repurposed as drifts etc. but I will see what I can do with a 6" section. According to the verniers...it ought to be pretty close.

As a plus....I also got a can of proper paint stripper....not the watered down stuff we get sold nowadays.
