drive chain
« on: March 05, 2008, 08:08:51 PM »
Hi there,
on the home straight of doing my re-build.

Noticed my drive-chain is not locating properly in sprocket.

checked the work shop manual for the right pitch with no luck.

would anybody know the right amount of links & pitch of chain for a K5 Honda 750?

cheers
Stevie

I believe that all bar the later Ks (K7/8?) used 520 chain.

Hey Steve, I think you're wrong there, the later K7/F2 had 630 chain, hence the wider chainline.

I think that's what I said Rob.

K0-K6: 520
K7-F2: 630

Still don't know the number of links though.  Don't most chains come with 110-ish and you cut them down and rivet them?

Sorry Steve, misread it!

Beware!! Not all swinging arms are interchangeable. The K7 hub/ swing arm is wider and longer than the K6. I think this was to accommodate that  wider 17 inch tyre on the K7. Phil

That's right, and the F2/K7 have also wider bearings at the outgoing shaft (sorry for my bad enlish here) to cope with the altered chain position caused by the wider rim/tyre combo.

This is of interest to me! I have been advised to use a 2.75 (or preferably 3 ) inch wide rim on the rear wheel in order to be able to use the best racing tire section. I am concerned that if I fit this wide rim and tire, the chain will foul the edge of the tire. The engine is based on a K7, the frame a K4. I have swinging arms from the K7 and the K4. I have rear hubs from the K7 and K4. Would using the K7 swinging arm and the K7 rear hub provide more clearance for the chain? Thanks guys!! Phil

Hey Phil,

You can always use a set of off-set sprockets.

10 or 20 m/m off-set.

Cheers, Rob

Early K's are definitely 530 stock - I've just converted mine to 520....
