CB550 K1 USA - Air filter
« on: January 31, 2019, 10:02:31 PM »
Hi all,

since today I have o top of my 750 K7 also 550 K1, so new project is starting  ;)
Started to list works to be done, spares to buy... a lot to do. ::)

First hesitation is Air filter (OEM Honda Air Cleaner Element 17210-374-003 or 17210-374-P00) no more available, I looked at HiFlo, they dont provide too.

So, which brand/type would you recommend? I want to keep bike stock...

Thanks

I've never had a cb550k1, but as far as I can recall all the cb550 and cb500/4 I have owned took the same filter.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

No, they are different with exception of the much later CB500K3 that had the same as the CB550K3.
The oldstyle CB500 airfilter element is much bigger (has more filtering surface) than the CB550 had. I seem to remember that originally even the CB550 'F' and 'K' models had different airfilter elements.

More to the point the 500 does not have the bypass recirc system so no hole in the bottom of the filter

Bryan  - I think the airbox is the same size though so presumably you an loft out the ‘spout’ piece in the bottom of the 550 airbox and use a 500 element?

It will fit but the paper at the bottom gets saturated in oil.

Good point. Guess you could just disable the PCV feed and vent it to atmosphere, then bung the hole in the bottom of the airbox. ?

As far as I recall it didn't get too oily. The cb500/4 was the bike I was happiest to spend money on spares to hold in stock. If the cb550 made do with what was on the shelf but it's a while ago so could well be mistaken.
