Why are you replacing it?
Yes you can remove head in frame, you need a decent manal, 3/8 metric socket set with 6 sided sockets, gasket set time and patience. Read the manual about refiting the cam cover then read it again, then again so you really comprehend it or you WILL bend valves and maybe break valve guides!
As the head will be off new stem seals is a good idea

Thankyou Bryan, one of the previous owners have knackered the slot on the adjuster which I recut with the dremmel also the thread is non serviceable , so I was looking for some tips I have previously taken the cam cover off etc (holding rockers up with elastic bands when refitting) it’s just about taken the head off in the frame also the removal of the tensioner, armed with (6 sided sockets etc ) Clymer/Haynes , As you say will replace seals while I’m there ,  so new guide and blade do you think .( my bride (70) says I have no patience ONLY  when messing with engines , must have been an Hgv syndrome 😜, thanks again ...

another thing to watch when replacing the tensioner assembly is make sure the bottom part is correctly located, it can be a bit fiddly
Love the 500 and 550 have a 500 called Lazarus under restoration

All the parts you need are same as 500, Dave Silver does a complete tensioner but it is a bit pricey.
Honda genuine manual is in Ash's dropbox.
I have posted many times on both sites about not putting a screwdriver in that slot as it knackers the rack/pinion mechanism.
If you have had the cover off you know about the soft washers between the steel end bracket and cover.
Can't think of much else but if you need to chat PM me and i will send you a number and time when i am at work.

I always remove the sump so that I can see the tensioner located correctly in its pocket.

Look in alladins cave in list at top, or if you want manuals and parts books on cd i can supply for a small cost as Ash got them from me in first place.
