which way round does it go. One end has flat flanges and the other curled

It should look like this Ricardo. The lugs are bent on yours as its a lock washer and its the tabs that lock. Off the top of my head, i don't know which end goes which side but it should be self explanatory.

Interested to know how you removed the front axle without opening the tabs 🤔🤔

I seem to recall that is I dismantled the parts the axle just pulled  out after the outer bits were removed (it was firmly fixed)
After that I was faced with the 2 bearings. The r side was removed and then the spacer just slid out. I then removed the L side bearing

I have the same number of parts as shown on the blown up drawing.
I intending putting the L side bearing back first as it has a seat cast into the hub. then insert the spacer then fit the r side bearing. Should I use the axle to guide it in some way??

Actually mine doesn't look like that. One end definitely has curled flanges as if they were twisted down.
Maybe that happened when I took the bearings out. I banged a lot.
Ill buy a new one

No need to buy a new one, just straighten it out.

Found a picture in 750 manual that shows it like your one with one end crimped in more.

They show it assembled with the more closed end nearest speedo drive,  it has the spindle with head end next to speedo drive so the opposite way round to your pictures.
