Carb balancing
« on: April 16, 2020, 10:24:39 AM »
Thoughts most welcome of the following.

My perhaps unscientific approach to carb balancing in the past was to use a stethoscope at the inlets, listen to the hiss, and basically to try and get the them all to sound the same. This seemed to work well on twin carbs fitted to old classic cars/bikes in the past in order to gain a reasonable balance, along with fiddling about a bit with the idle mix screws.

I still have the stethoscope, so would the same reasonable balance be obtained on the 4 carbs of the Honda using a similar method?

Alternatively, I have noted the cheap Chinese dial gauge stuff on EBay, and wodered whether they may offer a more suitable method...Clearly it may not be the best made stuff, but a more accurate method than the stethoscope perhaps?

Dial gauhe no but vacuum gauge yes but you need the more expensive Sealey type set.
Ever service item has to be spot on before tweeking carbs

I do mine with a lowcost vacuum gauge after setting them on the bench by eye. My final tweak is to check the temperature of each exhaust header after warming up,I have one of those infra red devices. I found one running cooler than the other three so adjusted the height slightly.

I love this thing:

https://www.carbtune.com/carbdtls.html

I have one of these, and it works well. The only downside is that the inner two adapters are fiddly to get in, as they are all the same size. Not like some kits, which come with two longer ones for the inner carbs.
