seems really tight to push through the yolk, but cant "open " the yolk holes any more

manuals just seem to say refit is reverse of removal ......rubbish  :D

It really is Mike.

Mine came out and slipped back in with no effort.

yolks been powder coated, if that makes a difference,

dave have tried this for a couple of hours,  did not think it would be this difficult , forks fed from the bottom though bottom yolk, literally half an inch and they stop, tried spreading the yolks a bit wider but not much give , started to file the inside of yolks and gave up way to much hard work

these should just slide up if im right ?

For future reference - be careful opening up the gaps as those things are brittle. I've seen them snap off before which can be a bit of a pain...

Better not to smash them cirtainly. I'd wonder if they didn't have a flaw in them if they snapped easily, perhaps from taking a knock in the past? I've taken appart some pretty ropey examples that have needed some perswasion and never seen one break.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
